Bill Better Protects Nurses From Workplace Violence


Amendments to the Illinois Criminal Code as of January 2014 make it an aggravated offense to commit battery against a nurse. Illinois already had the Health Care Workplace Violence Act, administered through the Department of Human Services and the Department of Public Health. It created a training program about workforce violence prevention for employers and employees, but violence against nurses continued to escalate. The recent amendments provide more stringent punishment for those who knowingly abuse a nurse performing his or her duty. House Bill 801 was passed based on the efforts of state Rep. Donald L. Moffitt and his peers in the House and Senate.

HEALTH CARE INCIDENTS: Nurse Brutally Beaten at Brooklyn Hospital: Police


February 10, 2014, Brooklyn, N.Y., - Police say a 70-year-old nurse at Brooklyn's Brookdale Hospital was beaten to the point of unconsciousness Friday when she tried to prepare a patient for discharge. The nurse suffered fractures to the face, hemorrhaging and chest contusions as a result of the beating, police said.
