S
uzano Papel e Celulose’s new pulp mill in Brazil, one of the largest of its type
in the world, successfully started up at the end of December, supplying customers in the US and Europe. With a total investment, including the associated forests, of almost US$2.9 billion, the mill at Imperatriz in Maranhão state has capacity to produce

1.5 million tonnes of bleached eucalyptus pulp a year. Other main products of the company are printing and writing paper and paperboard. At the start-up of the mill,
Walter Schalka, chief executive of Suzano Papel e Celulose, said: “This is a very special moment and represents an important stride for the company. We have overcome the first challenge, which was production start-up,
and now our teams are focused on the plant’s growth.” In addition to having its own
power station with excess capacity of 100MW, the mill will use its own 28km railroad, the North-South railroad and the Carajás railroad, and the packaged pulp will not be trans-shipped on its way to the Port of Itaqui, near Sao Luis on the north west coast, from where it will be exported.
“The shipping logistics of the plant is one of the project’s key competitive advantages,” says Schalka. Suzano will now focus on ramping up production to an estimated ouput of 1.1 million tonnes in 2014. Started in April 2011, the
greenfield project is the first complete pulp mill supplied in South America by Valmet, which was Metso Pulp, Paper and Power until the beginning
