RE-IMAGINED Quick reaction to your

article (“New Kid on the Block,” page 14 of the November issue): I think the Cummin’s 5-liter engine is an automotive miracle. For a 5-liter engine (that’s what’s in a Hummer!) to power a full-size school bus seems absolutely amazing. I’m betting Allison/ZF had to

redesign a transmission to optimize the torque this thing must put out. I remember 23 years ago when we put an 8.3-liter C-series Cummins engine into the TAM school bus, we got 10 mpg. Every other manufacturer at the time was using either a Detroit Diesel 6V92 (about 10 liters) or a larger Cummins or Caterpillar engine, and their school buses were getting 7 or 8 mpg.

Editor's note — Thanks for the feedback and historical perspective. Look for more on Cummins' new ISV5.0 in coming months.

RE: One Year After Sandy Hook Newtown School District

Installs Video Systems on Buses, Nov. 26, 2013 “I’m glade to read that steps are be taken to protect the stu- dents and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary. After all our parents are trusting us to do all we can to protect their family when they are going to and from school, on field trips and sporting events.” Michael Benedict Salt Lake City

RE: New Lighting System Helps to ‘Guard’ Students Board- ing Buses in the Dark, Nov. 11, 2013 “I love this light! Wondering why this lighting system is not

standard on all new buses and retrofitted on the old? Hurry and get this done! Lives are depending on it. We have always been told as kids not to play in or near the streets because it is danger- ous. Te law says we must send our kids to school, that means our kids unfortunately at times have to go into the streets to get there. Please help light their way. We owe it to them! Love this light!
