‘We are very proud to be part of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and we are confident we will be conducting more flights in support of the event as the opening ceremony gets even closer. Having been involved in supporting the preparations for the games over the past seven years, we feel a close connection with the city of Sochi and know they will deliver an outstanding event for the Olympics’ global audience.’

equipment to Sochi. This latest project for Volga-Dnepr involved two AN-124- 100 freighter flights delivering media communications and broadcasting equipment from Moscow for the ANO Sports Broadcasting Company to cover the Russian Cup and European Cup skiing competitions.

Broadcasting the Olympic Games takes years of detailed preparation work to ensure the event itself goes without a hitch in front of hundreds of millions of viewers all over the world. The skiing events provided an ideal ‘field test’ for broadcasters that will be covering the 2014 Games. A team of 150 media and technical specialists were on hand to work out the best way to deal with the

Tell me about Sochi?

Sochi is a multicultural city of 400,000 inhabitants representing more than 100 nationalities. It is situated in Krasnodar, the third largest region in Russia. Often referred to as the ‘Russian Riviera’, Sochi has a rich heritage as the nation’s major Black Sea port city, a resort destination and a prominent cultural centre. Sochi is in close proximity to both the European and Asian continents and is a convenient gateway to Eurasia. As such, Sochi has hosted a number of regional and European meetings, including the Russia-EU Summit.

challenges of working in such an uneven terrain, such as the installation of camera supports ranging from two to 10 metres in height and weighing up to 30 tons.

In support of the broadcast project, Volga- Dnepr also transported eight special vehicles to Sochi, including two equipped with transmitter-receivers. The flights were conducted to strict timelines and had to be performed within 24 hours. Volga-Dnepr also supplied special equipment for loading and offloading.

Sport equipment arrives onsite

At the start of 2013 as part of Volga-Dnepr Group’s ‘cargo supermarket’ service offering, AirBridgeCargo Airlines’ Boeing

747 freighters joined in the Olympic project, completing the first in a series of charter flights from Frankfurt to Sochi carrying sports equipment.

The start of regular Boeing 747F charter flights to Sochi was to cater for the needs of the companies engaged in the construction of various sports and infrastructure projects to ensure the timely and safe delivery of sports equipment and materials.

Empowering the Games

Volga-Dnepr’s latest special delivery to Sochi was in mid-2013 when it safely transported an 80-ton mobile gas turbine power plant on behalf of the Russian company Instar Logistics. The 20-metre long shipment travelled onboard an AN-124-100 freighter from Krasnoyarsk. With only 22cms clearance to the 4.4m height of the cargo hold, the turbine was driven onto the AN-124 using a long ramp extension, which lessened the angle of ascent and enabled Volga-Dnepr’s loading experts to safely position the cargo inside the aircraft.

To distribute the weight of the power plant, Volga-Dnepr used a special protective covering to strengthen the deck of the AN-124 cargo hold.
