The Norfolk Alumni Chapter of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the NAC - Save Our Youth Foundation, Inc. have an ongoing community partnership with the Norfolk Public School System. The Kappas have established their 2013- 2014 Adopt- A- School Project in 8 inner city schools. Elementary schools in this Save Our Youth initiative include Bowling, Ja- cox, Tidewater Park, Young, St. Helena, Cam- postella, Ingleside, and Chesterfield Academy. Earlier this month, Kappas delivered education- al material, supplies, and books to each school, which were proudly accepted by the schools’
principals and staff. According to one principal, this was the best and most needed gift his school could receive. On a monthly basis, volunteers have committed to offering tutorial and mentor- ing services to students at these schools. Class/ group readings, discussions, storytelling, math and reading skills development, “lunch pals,” holiday celebrations, and self-awareness will be emphasized. According to Chapter Polemarch Lewis T. Williams and Save Our Youth Founda- tion President George F. Reed, this opportunity to serve the community and support young peo- ple is a part of Kappa Alpha Psi’s mission and
purpose. A pool of brothers have committed to visiting a school several times per month, and sharing their time with classes or preselected male students during the lunch hour and at other designated times. At the Kappas’ 15th Annual Black History
Month Community Service and Awards Break- fast earlier this year, each school was awarded a $500 grant to assist with the purchase of much needed material, supplies, and for direct student/ program support. With the community’s and schools’ encouragement, the Kappas hope to continue this type of commitment.
