Work Has Started on Hampton’s Capital
Improvement Plan for 2015-2019 The city is hard at work on the 2015-2019 Capital Improvement Plan, including a schedule for meetings and community forums that will allow the public to help shape Hampton’s long- range objectives.
The plan is a five-year schedule for maintenance of public property, master plan initiatives, neighborhood support, education, economic development and other major improvements that support making Hampton the “Most Livable Community in Virginia.”
The first year of the plan becomes part of the city manager’s recommended budget each year. The other years serve as guidelines and goals for the future. The final plan has to be approved by City Council.
The first community-wide forum – which will include time for public comment, will be Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. at the West Hampton community Center, 12638 Briarfield Road. The second community-wide forum will be Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. at Kecoughtan High School, 522 Woodland Road.
The forums are part of an overall plan to review and categorize all new funding requests and the various revenue sources available.
The process began more than a month ago when city manager Mary Bunting and her staff started meeting with individual commissions and offices to discuss capital projects – those that cost more than $50,000 and have a life expectancy of more than five years. Upcoming meetings - which are open to the public but may not include time set aside for public comment - include:
• Nov. 12, Clean City Commission: 3:30 p.m. in the Community Development Conference Room.
• Nov. 18, Hampton Neighborhood Commission: 5 p.m. in the Community Development Conference room.
• Nov. 19, Coliseum Central: 9 a.m. in the Coliseum Central BID office, 4410 Claiborne Sq. E #211.
• November 20, Downtown Hampton Development Partnership: 8:30 a.m. in the partnership offices at 710 Settlers Landing Road.
