Scientists use their skills to create gin

THE science of alchemy is undergoing a re- vival in Marden, thanks to twoscientistswith a passion for the finer things in life. Andy Reason andNorman Lewis worked at GlaxoSmithKline for more than 10 years, be- fore being made redundant. The pair (pictured right), who share a love

of good whisky –were looking for a challenge and contemplated setting up a whisky dis- tillery, but went off the idea when they re- alised whisky has to remain in the bottle for three years and a day to qualify for the title. “That could have caused us quite a cash

flow problem,” said Andy, who lives in Weavering. Instead they turned their attention to gin,

which is still a growing market. For the past twoyears, they worked quietly

at their Pattenden Lane unit, refining a gin which is easy on the palate, and reflects the taste of the region. They now employ Andy’s daughter Kim

(27), who gave up a job teaching scuba div- ing in Malaysia to take on the administration and marketing side of the business. The Anno distillery is the first artisan

micro distillery in Kent and the first to distill gin in the county for nearly 200 years. Andy said: “The planwas to bring together

the art of distillation and Kentish hops to pro- duce an outstanding gin with a unique flavour of Kent.” Norman added: “Unlike many distillers,

our scientific background in the pharmaceu- tical industry gives us a practical under- standing of the equipment capabilities, allowing us tomake the highest quality prod- ucts.”

Containing a magical mix of botanicals – the flowers and herbs which give the drink

its unique personality – Anno gin contains not only the obligatory juniper berries, but also a combination of Kentish hops, lavender, elderflower and rose hips. But the ingredient that makes Anno unique

is samphire. “We are hoping samphire might become

the new cucumber,” said Andy. “The salti- ness of samphire has a similar effect to the way salt brings out the flavours of some spir- its.”

Andy and Norman are pictured right. It is already on sale at the Secret Cellar in

Tunbridge Wells and Butler’s Wine Mer- chants in Brighton, but they hope to draw business from some of the City’s top wine merchants and restaurants, as well as from chains such asWaitrose.

Villages seek input on neighbourhood plan

COXHEATH Parish Council will be consulting on the draft CoxheathNeighbourhood Plan from November 8to Decem- ber 20. The planwill guide howCoxheath develops over the next

to get rid ofmostof the build-outs, improving the village cen- tre, parking, GP health facilities, recreation and amenity, walking /cycling and protection of community assets. It is hoped thatasmanypeople as possible will attend the
