outing for me and my horse riding friends than a barn visit. Linda Toledo, Shirley Gallagher, Darlene Stockton, Ginny Nokes, Val Hackney and I (Terry Carter) were treated to the warm family hospitality of Jerry & Staci Diaz at their 3 Mile Creek Ranch near New Braunfels, Texas. We were treated to watching horses in training, with Jerry commenting on the horse’s history, levels of training, and goals that was re- ally a mini clinic. We all came out to see the various breeds: Aztecas (Andulusian/Quarter Horse cross), Quarter Horses, Andulusians, a Freisian stallion and a couple of Saddlebreds, all learning to be handy and able to work with a light touch when needed. We saw colts which had been ridden only a couple of times to those well- schooled horses-all moved with enjoyment in their work, mostly because Jerry is so positive and happy to be working with “his” horses. There was no rushing through the horse’s paces, but a

genuine care we all understood and came to appreciate each as an individual. Under the shade trees, during lunch on picnic tables, we continued to listen to the Diaz family history and training philosophy, or won- derful stories told by a Master Horseman and talented story teller. Jerry’s father, Pepe Diaz, and his grandfather were all Master Horsemen, members of the Charro tradition of advanced horsemanship.

the family deserves another article to tell such history of Pepe’s appointment to train for Mexico’s President Cardenas, to Jerry’s yearly performance extravaganzas produced in Den- ver, Ft. Worth, Canada and other rodeo venues. A member of several professional horse associations, he is entitled a “Charro de Corazon” – a rider from the heart, so deep is his love and respect for each horse. The performances include Jerry’s wife Staci and son Nicolas, too. Staci Anderson Diaz is from the Anderson horse performance

family, traveling since childhood to rodeos, trick riding event and even circus work. She still works Roman riding on four matched grey Aztecas and trains them in high-school moves. Ten year old Nicolas rides telling an Indian story, shooting a target with bow and arrow from his cantering horse and yes, his aim is good. Besides the lightness of mouth and bright collection as the basis of many riding purpos- es from ranch work, reining and even saddleseat, Jerry stresses the first and most important ac- tivity to be safety for the rider, the horse, and their partnership. From that foundation is built to the highest level of ability and accomplishment in any field - show performances, ranch work or just joyously riding the fields. We only heard a small bit of what could be learned this special, talented trainer. So, we all have decided to spend another day with the Diaz family – really very soon. Terry Carter.

Ron Nokes received Air force orders we were advised that Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio would be our next duty station, my first concern were the horses. I knew where Texas was but had no idea where San Antonio was located.

house being purchased in Seguin was still in closing status and it was necessary to find a place to board the stallion Rickey and one of his sons. People at Kelly AFB recommended Pepe Diaz Stable. This led to my meeting Pepe Diaz. The Texas culture was something new to me. We Yankee’s were a bit more re- serve and didn’t reach out quite like the Texans. I was in awe. Everyone was so helpful at the stable. Pepe is such a caring man. We were welcomed into their world and made to feel a part of it.

smarter than his rider. Although I had shown the Arabian show circuit and could show a horse, It dawned on me how little I really knew. I learned so much in a short time. There are hundreds and hundreds of trainers but very few true horsemen. When we think of the Masters, Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance come to mind. I have personally known three such Master horseman... Walter Chapman, Pepe and Jerry Diaz. They were blessed with the ability to read the horse like a book. One thing they all have in common is their willingness to share their talents. They care about horses and people. After our ladies day out visiting the 3 Mile Creek Ranch, we were all excited and inspired ready to learn more. We have been back. The people we meet through horses is the big reward. Cham- pionship awards are important at the moment, horse friends are forever. November 9th
