Fall & Winter: Rest & Improve

MELNA President Betty Ann Listowich,

by Betty Ann Listowich, Norpine Landscape, Inc. As I write this article for your reading pleasure, it’s

hard to believe that cool fall temps will be upon us in just a few short weeks. Goodness knows we can all use them now, along with a little beneficial rainfall. By the time you are getting your MELNA newsletter the contractors in our membership will be looking toward the end of their planting season, the retailers will be ramping up for that all important Christmas season. With good fortune you will be able to look back at these past 10 months and say they were successful for your business as well as your employees, hopefully leaving a trail of happy customers in your wake throughout your past season.

Te change of seasons here in Maine is a blessing

for everyone. Tese changes bring great interest in our diverse landscape, as well as a much needed break from the pressures of a condensed planting schedule. I love to work hard, but I love to play hard too, and the coming months bring some of both for me. Enjoy this time for whatever gets your juices flowing. For some of us it’s a trip to NE Grows, or perhaps a more extravagant trip to warmer climes as the cold sets in. For me, it’s about going skiing! Make good use of your transition, no matter when

your business moves into its lull season, to learn from your past year. Was it a particularly good one for you? Could it have been better? Before you make that transition I urge you to do something important for your own self being as well as the health of your company: Take a moment to take stock in how your year went while it’s fresh in your mind. Have a team meeting with your crews and listen to their ideas, listen to what they offer up for efficiencies and team building. It’s their feet on the ground that will provide you with some valuable insight on how you can make improvements in your business. Take notes, make plans, and get ready for that fresh start with the coming year. Te executive and committee

volunteers of MELNA will be doing this throughout the fall and into the winter, trying to make our organization strong and responsive to our membership. If you have suggestions on how we can improve for you, please take a moment to make some notes and shoot them off to whomever you are comfortable sharing them with, I promise we will listen.
