October 2013 Around Hampton Roads

• Healthy People Healthy Suffolk – coordinates resources, workgroups and serves as the primary source for information and advocacy on issues related to healthy eating, active living, and policies that contribute to a healthy Suffolk.

“The inclusive structure of The Partnership has truly served as a magnet for innovative people who have great ideas about improving the health of the community,” remarked Virginia Savage, who served as The Partnership’s first President. “It (The Partnership) offers a way – the process and support (resources and moral) - to bring those ideas to life!” Savage concluded.

“With the October 5th launch, we’re rolling out the $15 @ 15 Community Campaign to reach people across the area and engage them in our mission of improving the health of Suffolk and celebrate this milestone,” said Marcie Laumann, Director of Development.

As a donor-driven organization, The Partnership devotes its contributions to help improve the lives and well-being of those who live, work, play or pray in Suffolk with programs that encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. The goal of $15@ 15 is $15,000. Donations can be made directly online through www.MyPlanG.com/SPHC or via mail to $15@15 Campaign, c/o Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community, 1707 North Main Street, Suffolk VA 23434. All donations are tax deductible.

are unsuccessful, EUF’s hope is that this event will give them a chance to showcase their talents and be offered an opportunity to further their education via an athletic scholarship.

Most recently EUF and the

Franklin community at large collected over 18 boxes of school supplies and presented them to the Franklin Public Schools. These materials will be given to students who may need assistance to obtain school supplies.

On October 27th, EUF will partner

with the Pink is Powerful Cancer Support Group to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and to help individuals battling cancer. This “Shades of Pink”

occasion will take place at the Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin, VA.

When asked why EUF wanted to

support this event, co-founder Corey Olds stated, “We felt it was imperative to assist in such a worthy cause. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Many women in the Franklin and Southampton County area will need support and resources to assist in dealing with the struggles of breast cancer. Often times, rural areas are less informed; therefore, EUF hopes to combat the ills of this disease in the Hampton Roads area, especially in Franklin and Southampton counties through "Pink is Powerful".”
