Children’s garden picks up a prize

A MAGICAL garden from Yalding left flower show judges spellbound–sending its creatorsbacktoKent clutching a first prize. “Under the Rainbow”, a colourful community-based garden inspired by theWizard of Oz,wasdevisedby Fleurs de Filles, the company run by former florist Sally Kimmis (50) and her hus- band Ian Fuller (60). The concept behind the show gar-

denwas to encourage children toenjoy gardening, so childrenwerebrought intohelpplant itupfor theHar- rogate Flower Showearlier this month. The show in Yorkshire is the first autumnal flower

show, and eight show gardens were commissioned from top designers nationwide. Sally’s garden won a silver gilt award. Lughorse Lane resident Sally, above, who studied at Hadlow College, had planned ahead, asking chil-

dren from a Harrogate school to growtomatoes in re- cycled milk containers and strawberries in recycled tin cans. Boundary fencing was made from recycled pallets

and a greenhouse was made from recycled plastic bottles. The yellowbrickroadwasmadefrom recycled glass and the garden had its own solar-powered irri- gation system. Sally, whose helpers included friends and her hus-

band, said: “It was the aim of the garden to engage children with gardening and the children did a great job, looking after their plants all through the summer holidays. “This was our first show garden and while most

showgardens arepristineaffairs, oursused lots of re- cycled materials. Itwas risky, but it paid off.” Sally is donating the cot bed, totempole and dolly

pram, which formed part of her show garden, to Wil- lowbrook Place, a supported housing project in Tovil.

Taking action on speeding cars Fatal crash case

TRAFFIC calming measures could be brought in to stop cars speeding through East Farleigh. Following a community consultation in the vil-

lage late last year, DHA Transport Ltd was en- gaged to develop proposals for addressing the problems of speeding vehicles and pedestrian safety. The parish council agreed that plans should be drawn up for consultation on traffic calming measures and junction improvements at Lower Road, Station Hill, Vicarage Lane and Forge Lane. Speeding traffic isworst on Lower Road, east of

the Bull pub, where drivers have been found to average more than 42mph in a 30mph limit. Almost 50,000 vehicles aweek use Lower Road

and Station Hill – quite disproportionate for a vil- lage of just 600 houses, claims the parish council,

which now has a sub-committee to monitor the data and continue to press KCC for action to im- prove traffic and pedestrian safety. County Cllr Paulina Stockell has agreed to help

fund junction improvements and push for the im- position of a uniform 30mph speed limit through- out the village, using her member highways grant – something that has widespread support. However, the parish council has been informed

that, as East Farleigh is made up of several ham- lets, a 30mph limit throughout cannot be granted, because it is largely made up of unpopulated lanes. The parish council has also been in touch with

KCC about the junction of Forge Lane and Dean Street, which is now drawing up a new scheme to improve the junction.

Office to home plan PETER Court Associates has applied to convert an office into a one-bedroom home in Highlands Lodge, Chartway Street, Sutton Valence.
