Historical Journeys
THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD In the 1800s, the DuPage County communities of Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Hinsdale, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Brook, Warrenville, Wayne, West Chicago and Wheaton are believed to have had “stations” in the Underground Railroad.
• Sheldon Peck Homestead (Lombard): This verifiable stop in Lombard is now a museum featuring the original owner’s memoirs and other memorabilia from this period in history. • Wheaton College (Wheaton): Another verifiable location, the college was founded by ardent abolitionists. • Graue Mill & Museum (Oak Brook): Illinois’ only operating waterwheel gristmill was another stop and now features an exhibit with photographs, documents, a computer interactive system and additional displays.
