Maryland Will Miss Horse breeder E. Allen Murray, Jr. of Mur-


mur Farm in Darlington died on August 13 at the age of 80. Born in Havre de Grace, Murray graduated from Havre de Grace High School and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware. He retired in 1989 after a career spanning more than 30 years as an electrical engineer at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Audrey Rickey, of Per- ryman. Murray had outstanding success in the T oroughbred horse breeding and racing are- nas. Since 1961, he and his wife had owned and operated Murmur Farm, originally established in Churchville then relocated to Darlington in 1988. From their fi rst stallion purchase, Buck Hill, they continued to buy, syndicate and sell stallion shares in a highly competitive interna- tional market earning industry-wide respect for their discerning ability to select the best qual- ity horses. Murray considered their purchase of Our Emblem in 2001 and subsequent sale his greatest success, after the stallion’s son War Emblem won both the 2002 Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. and raced many important stakes winners, in- cluding Celtic Innis, Saudi Brass, Regal Solo and Big Ego. In 2004, the Murrays purchased Berkley Farm, also in Darlington, and imme- diately began work on designing and creating a premier training facility, including a state-of- the-art race track which Murray considered to be his fi nest engineering accomplishment. His lifelong love of horses took him from riding in horse shows with Audrey as a teenager to build- ing up a formidable breeding and racing stable and serving as a prominent spokesperson and advocate for the breeding business. He served for many years on both the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland Million Ltd. Boards of Directors, among others. Paul V. Jacobs of Glenelg died on July 20 at the age of 87. Jacobs was born in Kentucky and graduated from the University of Kentucky. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and an electronic engineer with Westinghouse for many years. Jacobs was a whipper-in for Howard County Hounds (now Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. James Michael “Mike” Sutphin of Union


Bridge died on July 30. He was 58. Sutphin owned and operated J & M Drywall for 15 years. He was an active member of the Appa- loosa Horse Club and bred, raised, trained and showed Appaloosa halter horses for many years both locally and nationally. Sutphin was also a charter member of the Free State Appaloosa Horse Club and the former Mason and Dixon Appaloosa Club. M. Robert Ritchie, Jr. died on August 5 at the age of 100. Ritchie was born and raised in Frederick and owned Holly Hill Farm in Ijamsville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. After graduating from Frederick High School, he began selling insurance and eventually formed Ritchie Associates Insurance Co. Ritchie was a longtime supporter of the Frederick Pony Club and New Market-Middletown Hounds. Leah Christine McElgunn, 20 of Catons-


ville, died on July 26 after a car accident on Daisy Road in Howard County. She was an avid horseback rider and owned a horse named Simba.
