Boss outraged by broadband charge

ABUSINESSMAN says the efficiency of his company is being badly compromised by slow broadband speeds. Spencer Vitten, who runs Trident Trailers

at the Target Business Centre in the Park- wood Industrial Estate, wants to implement a computer system that would provide real- timemonitoring of the company’s financial performance and stock levels.

But this has been near impossible because

the broadband speed at the shop is just 0.5 megabytes per second – below the national average of 3.8Mb. The new system requires computer interaction between the Maid- stone and Faversham branches. The latter has a download speed of 4Mb. Mr Vitten said: “Our current connection is just not fast or stable enough. As soon as

Why Charlie is top dog

in Commons ‘kennel’ MAIDSTONEMPHelen Grant has something spe- cial to bark about – she's the proud owner ofWest- minster's top dog. Charlie, her five-year-old border terrier, was re- warded for his "paw-litical" prowess by winning the annual competition run by the Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club. Helen, who lives in Marden, said: "Charlie is an

avid campaigner. He protested alongside me against proposals to close Maidstone's maternity services and loyally joined my predecessor Ann Widdecombe and me on the campaign trail in all weathers." She added: "I'm so proud of Charlie for winning - he celebrated with a juicy bone."

Guesthouse can turn into homes PLANNING consent has been granted for the con- version of Aylesbury House at 56-58 London Road, Maidstone, into a block of semi-detached homes.

Owners Richard and Nicola Dennis say the eight-bedroom guesthouse has struggled to reach full occupancy since the opening of large hotels in Maidstone including the Village Hotel and the Travelodge.

we switch this facility on, it slows each sale at the till from a matter of seconds to up to five minutes. Obviously we cannot expect customers to wait this long for a receipt.” According to Mr Vitten, BT says there is

no way of improving the broadband signal to either branch through the current stan- dard line. The company could offer a direct lease line between the two branches with a

guaranteed 2Mb broadband speed, but over three years this would cost £6,400 to install and a yearly rental of £11,523. Mr Vitten added: “I was flab- bergasted at this outrageous quotation, purely to get 2Mb broadband speed. We are a local company who are manag- ing to keep our heads above water and progressing during such difficult times, and this is the help we get. I know there are many other businesses ex- periencing the same problem.” The Government recently pushed back a target for every UK home to have at least a 2Mb broadband connection, from 2012 to 2015.
