Alpha Iota, Gamma Xi, and Lambda Omega Serving Together in the Community

Volume 7 Number 12

7 Redskins Stats You Probably Don’t Know

August 2013

Chesapeake, VA – Brothers from Alpha Iota (Bro Dowdy), Gamma Xi (Bros James Parker and Antoine Hickman), and Lambda Omega (Stephen Harris) recently participated in the 6th annual Serve the City (STC) Chesapeake community outreach event. STC is a weeklong partnership between the Chesapeake 5th Precinct police department, community churches, civic leagues, businesses, and Crestwood middle school. The goal of STC is to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the community. Projects are divided into Repair, Yard, Visitation, and Meal teams. This year’s event had approximately 260 volunteers and completed over 365 projects on 75 homes. Throughout the year, members of STC participate in fund raising activities such as pie auctions and car washes in order to purchase materi- als and food for the event. Brother Dowdy is one of the Repair team leads and is responsible for assessing home repair projects to determine cost and completion time. Once repair projects are prioritized and teams have been formed, Brother Dowdy oversees and participates in the completion of the re- pairs. Brothers completed projects that included rebuilding sub-floors, laying linoleum, screen repairs, mowing, mulching, weeding, and power washing. The week concluded on Saturday, June 22 with a free community barbeque. STC and community members fellowshipped and built bonds that go beyond the physical efforts of this annual event. The project impact and participation continues to grow, as local Brothers step up to meet the challenge leading the charge to a successful community event.

Gov. Bob McDonnell celebrates the grand opening of the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Facility in early July with former Redskins star Joe Theismann.

BY KATHRYN WATSON ALEXANDRIA — As the first

day of training camp kicked off for the Washington Redskins at their plush new training facility in Richmond, fans were bound to eagerly spend their dough on beer and burgers to watch their favorite NFL team play.

But football fans aren’t the only ones forking over cash.

There are plenty of financial

favors between the Redskins and Virginia politics — like the ties between Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and what he calls Virginia’s team. McDonnell, who married a former Redskins cheerleader, Maureen, is both a beneficiary and a benefactor of the Redskins.

Here are seven Redskins stats

even the most loyal fans probably don’t know.

$11.2 million — The amount

Richmond city taxpayers fronted to build the 17-acre complex.

$4 million — The amount of the

grant McDonnell approved to persuade the Redskins to keep their corporate headquarters in Virginia in 2012. McDonnell called it a “performance- based” grant, and said offering it is a “legitimate role” for the state to play by investing in business and the local economy. Between 2008 and 2012, the Redskins compiled a 33-47 record.

$50,000 — The donation the

Redskins gave to McDonnell’s gubernatorial campaign in 2009.

$42,500 — The amount the

Redskins donated to the Republican Party of Virginia in the 2012 election cycle.

$39,300 — The amount the

Redskins donated to Republican George Allen’s 2012 run for U.S. Senate.

$19,000 — The value of the

suite the Redskins gave McDonnell in 2012.

4 — The number of lobbyists paid

by the Redskins to influence Richmond policy from May 2012 to April 2013.
