This is a lakefront property with a great view.

shade over the scene. The terraces are planted with ‘Proanna’ creeping juni- per. A gorgeous lime-coloured ‘Aurea’ barberry lights up one side, its colour echoed by another Hakone grass, on the other side of the stone steps. ‘Rosy Glow’ barberry offers its leaf changing magic from another corner. Native ferns grow between the rocks.
“I didn’t plant those,” notes Wendy. “They came with the rocks.” It was one of those happy accidents that so please her. There are more trees and shrubs here, too: a Swiss stone pine and a ‘Gold Thread’ cypress. You won’t see a lot of fertilizer and

water-hungry containers in Wendy’s garden, except where nothing else will grow – places such as under the beech trees where it is very shady and dry. But you will see wonderful plantings of dark-leafed heuchera with spires of red flowers waving happily from their place by the terrace. They set off the ‘Fire and Ice’ hosta behind them and show well against the variegated euonymus plant- ed snugly against the house. Wendy has three children: Her oldest,
Lauren, has two children of her own now and she has begun to appreciate the irresistible pull of the garden. “She is beginning to understand the peace it
brings,” says Wendy. Her son, Graydon, is busy with his young life right now and her youngest daughter, Erin, is an artist. (Erin brought Wendy’s garden to our attention at Ontario Gardener as a gift to her mother and a mark of her love and respect for what Wendy has done.) Wendy believes in the value of garden-
ing as did her mother, who always says that flowers feed her soul. Wendy agrees. “I believe that everybody should get
their hands dirty as least once a
year,” she says, adding thoughtfully, “If you have a garden and a book, then you are rich. They satisfy all my senses.” V
