he importance of forestry and the woodworking and paper industries in the bio-economy were pointed out by Antonio di Giulio of the European Commission in his introductory speech at a lunch debate organised by the Forest-based Technology Platform (FTP) in the European Parliament on 9 July. This debate was hosted by Maria da Graça Carvalho, MEP, to discuss the renewed ‘Vision 2030’ and revised ‘Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda 2020’ (SRA) for the forest industry.
During the event, the potential of research and innovation in the European forest-based sector to create economic growth and provide solutions to the challenges facing today’s society was discussed. The ten new and very ambitious ‘Vision’ targets were highlighted by FTP Manager Johan Elnert, showing the dual role of the sector in job creation and growth, as well as the benefits that it offers society. For example, a fresh estimate has been made of the carbon emission savings if the European Parliament had been built with wood – this amounted to a reduction in its carbon footprint of at least 60%! During discussions, Antonio di Giulio stressed that the European Commission, as well as the European Technology Platforms, could play a key role in educating young people about the forest sector and attracting them to work in the industry, whilst Maria do Céu Patrão Neves, MEP, of the Agriculture & Rural Development Committee called for a stronger focus on forestry in the European Common Agricultural Policy. The FTP’s ‘Vision 230’, which supports the EU’s strategy for sustainable and inclusive growth, reflects the fact that the forest-based sector is a key component of the bio-based society. The SRA, which sets out how the sector will find the technical, business and social innovations to provide answers to Europe’s major challenges, runs up to 2020. After then, up to a decade will be needed for agreed solutions to be universally adopted and thus make ‘Vision 2030’ a reality. More information can be found on the FTP website: www.
