Chairmen voted in again Parking times
THE annualmeeting was held before the monthly one and councillors voted to keep both chair- man Cllr Reverend Christopher Morgan- Jones and vice-chairman Cllr Glyn Charlton in position for another term. No other nomina- tions were received for either post andmembers voted unanimously in favour of each person. Both councillors thankedmembers for voting for them. Five councillors were elected onto the parish’s planning committee: Barry Beardwell, Eddy Vin- nicombe, Derek Mortimer, Kanan Purkayastha and Clare Bush. The chairman said it was tradition to allow
Cllr Chris Morgan- Jones (left) and Cllr Glyn Charlton (right) were both re-elected
other members to at- tend planning meet- ings if they wished. Councillors Mortimer and Clive English re- mained as the coun- cil’s representatives on the Kent Association of Local Councils (KALC) and members decided to ask Cllr Suzanne Neal, who
was absent, if shewished to continue as their rep- resentative on the Loose Valley ConservationArea Partnership. The chairman and vice-chairman, along with
Cllr English, remained as representatives on the human resources committee and Cllr Julie Kairis agreed to be a reserve member.
Parking permit anger
A MEMBER of public complained that residents who pay for parking per- mits in Church Road were unable to get into the parking bays allocated to them because residents occupying new flats which, it had been un- derstood, were specifically for non car owners, were parking in them.
He said one neighbour returned home after a 12-hour shift and could
not park near his house. Several members, including councillors English, Mortimer and Chittenden, said many councillors had voted against park- ing permits in that area but that the borough council’s administration had agreed them, despite this.
Road still dented A DIP in the road in Forest Hill, which the chairman described as “appalling”, was due to be fixed at the end of June. The road collapsed during a severe underground water leak at the beginning of the year and despite being resurfaced in March the council still deemed it a danger. Cllr Mortimer said Kent Highway Services in- tended to start fixing it from June 24.
Alarm annoyance A MEMBER of public described an alarm that had been sound- ing on a business property in Church Road for more than eight weeks as being “like water torture”. The council agreed to contact the owner of the build- ing before reporting it to Maid- stone Council.
Hayle Mill planning NO objection was raised to a retrospective listed building ap- plication for alterations to Hayle Mill in Hayle Mill Road.
Crossing coming A PELICAN crossing should be installed in Tovil Road by July, Cllr Mike Hogg said.
Fellow borough Cllr Ian Chit- tenden added that the work would take place during the school summer holidays, which councillors agreed was sensible, and would take about six weeks.
Poetic place names wanted
THE parish council has been asked to suggest names for roads and blocks of flats at a new development near Hayle Place. It has been suggested to seek inspiration from The Hop Garden, written by poet Christopher Smart in the late 1700s, which men- tions Maidstone and the Medway Valley. Cllr Mortimer described some of the descriptions in the poem as “romantic”. He also suggested some of the seven place names requested by
Taylor Wimpey could be named after cricketers who played in a fa- mous match at Hayle Place in May 1965 – Medway Valley vs Aus- tralian Country XI.
Tesco car park work SEVERAL residents com- plained to parish and borough councillors about loud work taking place in Tesco’s car park in Farleigh Hill without prior warning.
Residents woke one Sunday morning to the sound of the car park being resurfaced. Borough Cllr Mike Hogg said the matter had been reported to Maidstone Council’s environmental health team. He said Tesco had apolo- gised for “forgetting” to inform residents and the borough council the work was going to be carried out.
extension hope A BUSINESS owner ap- proached the council and asked whether restrictions in the parish car park in Church Street could be adjusted to allow peo- ple to park for three hours in- stead of two. The owner said her cus- tomers often had appointments lasting longer than two hours meaning they were unable to park close to her premises. Cllr Clive English said it would the- oretically be possible but the idea would need to go out to public consultation before a de- cision was made. Councillors said the parking
issue in the area would be made worse when flats in the former Victory pub and The Rose Inn were occupied. It was agreed to make the parking issue an agenda item for the fol- lowing month’s meeting.
Dangerous areas BROKEN fencing, described by the chairman as “dangerous”, had been removed near land off Woodbridge Drive, which had been reserved for a play area. Rocks that had fallen down a bank and landed close to the fu- ture play area, which were also deemed a danger, had been cleared by volunteers from the Loose Valley Conservation So- ciety.
The council was still waiting for play equipment to be pro- vided by the developer.
Council invited to join infrastructure group THE council will be invited to join other local organisations in forming a group that can work together to deal with traffic, con- gestion and other problems that involve a wider area. Cllr Derek Mortimer had spoken to members of North Loose Res- idents’ Association, Loose Valley Conservation Partnership, Loose Parish Council and Loose Amenities and they had suggested form- ing SMITH (South Maidstone Infrastructure, Transport and Hous- ing group). The chairman said the parish council would need to receive correspondence from the proposed group and members would then decide whether to formally join.
Towpath bin delay LITTER bins ordered for the towpath at the end of Wharf Road, between Tovil Footbridge and Lockmeadow, were four weeks behind schedule due to a manufacturer delay.
