I n t e r v i ew | CCTVIma g e From Secret Service to PSIM

From a career working security at the highest levels of the US government, John Gill moved into the world of commercial security. In his latest role at VidSys, he sees himself as an “evangelist” for physical security information management (PSIM), as he told CCTV Image in a recent interview.

PSIM is ideally suited to complex, high-threat environments like the White House, says John Gill

A FORMER head of security at the White House has joined VidSys, the PSIM solutions provider, where he plans to be an “evangelist” for the technology which he claims can transform security opera- tions in complex environments. Gill most recently served as the vice president of business devel-

opment for AGT and 3i-MIND, providers of threat intelligence solutions, where he managed the global agency practice. Prior to that, he served as the White House chief security officer for both the Bush and Obama administrations where he managed and imple- mented security policies and programmes supporting the White House complex and the Executive Office of the President. Prior to that, he worked for 25 years in the US Secret Service in a variety of roles. He told CCTV Image that one of the things that made him want

to work at VidSys was the way the company’s PSIM technology matched the Secret Service’s approach to security and that his new job at VidSys is to help overcome some of the scepticism around PSIM technology. “Our solutions are really designed to support the same sort of mission approach or philosophy that I’m familiar with in my previous life, of prevention and pro-action,” he said. VidSys CEO Michael P. Jackson said, “John’s extensive experi-

ence in both the public and private sectors give him intimate knowl- edge and understanding of the security challenges organisations worldwide face on a regular basis. His broad security background will help us continue to deliver the type of technology required to manage today’s complex threat ecosystem.”

Complex correlations “My primary role is to help develop our business in the federal market

place, both on the civilian side and the DoD side,” Gill said. “I certainly hope to be able to leverage my operational experience from my previ- ous life in law enforcement and security to help grow the market share in this area.” Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) grew out of Security Information Management, a method of managing security in the complex world of IT. By collecting and correlating information from many computers regarding security-related events, SIM software attempts to proactively manage – in real time – attacks on organisa- tions’ computer networks. In a similar manner, PSIM gathers information from a range of secu-

rity devices, human intelligence and other sources to analyse and reveal attacks as they develop. “I think the true PSIM solutions like we have here at VidSys can

provide organisations with the opportunity to get out in front of events, to surface and manage potential situations, so again a very proactive philosophy rather than a reactive one,” Gill said. “I find it interesting that while there seems to be a general acknowl- edgement of the value of data analytics, there’s still some scepticism about the ability of physical security data to be able to do a similar type of thing, to be able to surface actionable information,” he said. “I see a large part of my job to help, to be an evangelist for PSIM and help dispel that notion.”
