tremendous amount of capital,” says Allan. “There is a possibility foreign investors will start coming in and buying up Canadian companies — take on the financial risk of developing those plays.”
Allan says initial “estimations” on how much resource in play exists in the formations are just that. He admits there is a lot of interest from within and outside Canada.
“These plays will definitely draw a lot of investor attention to Alberta and Canada but will also bring about a lot more stringent regulations,” Allan says.
Although Alberta is a well of technology. accessing potential reserves won’t require rocket science. Drillers will, however, face a host of problems once licensed.
“The plays will use established hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies to reach the resource,” says Travis Davies, spokesman for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. “The challenges will differ in
terms of how much development and infrastructure is already in place — there is more at Montney than either of the others. This kind of thing will have an impact on cost of production and ability to transport products.”
Davies says Imperial Oil, Shell, Encana Corp., Chevron Corp. and Talisman Energy are among those already drilling wells in Duvernay. Trilogy Energy Corp., Celtic Exploration and Yoho Resources are among the big players already active in Montney. Husky Energy and Quicksilver Resources also begun drilling in the Muskwa play.
He adds the success of the plays will have some affect on the world market but says it will depend on commodity prices in the future and access to the global market for oil and gas reserves.
“Value is driven by global demand, which is forecasted by the International Energy Agency to increase 35 per cent by 2035,” says Davies. “All energy sources will be required to meet this need.”
