POLICE NAME DEAD RAIDER
GUNMAN DIED INSIDE BOOKIES
POLICE yesterday named the gunman who died after trying to rob a bookmakers in the Westcountry.
Plymouth police commander Chief Superintendent Andy Bickley said the dead man was 50-year-old Alan Levers, who lived near the Ladbrokes branch in the city that he attempted to rob on Friday night.
The raider went into the bookies, on Crown- hill Road in West Park, with a gun and was im- mediately overpowered by people in the shop. Police were called and it became clear that the gunman was uncon- scious. Attempts to save Mr Levers, who lived in Honicknowle, were un- successful.
Mr Bickley said yes- terday that the death of the man at the bookies was ‘tragic’.
