EACH GENERATION of African-American Virginians has built on the achievements of those who came before to lead the way into the future.


Dominion and the Library of Virginia are proud to honor the 2013 Strong Men & Women in Virginia History, including men and women who were born in slavery then rose to become legislators, educators, civil rights activists and trailblazers, as well as those who continue to push back frontiers in their communities, the military and even space.


Their achievements make it possible for today’s young people to lead the way onward.


The Strong Men & Women in Virginia History program is sponsored by Dominion and the Library of Virginia to honor the contributions of influential African-American leaders. The program also helps prepare future leaders by providing resource materials for schools and libraries.
