FEI Launches New Equestrian Pictograms To Celebrate Massive Sport Growth

The Fédération Equestre Inter- nationale (FEI), the world governing body for horse sport, has launched new pictograms for its seven disci- plines to celebrate the massive global growth of equestrian sport.

Equestrian events in the seven disciplines governed by the FEI - Jumping, Dressage & Para-Dressage, Eventing, Driving & Para-Driving, Endurance, Reining and Vaulting - have grown by 33% since 2008, with over 3,200 events taking place on all seven continents in 2012.

Olympic Jumping rider and graphic designer, was selected from an anonymous shortlist by a panel chaired by FEI President HRH Princess Haya. The panel members also included Kevin Staut, one of France’s most successful Jumping riders and the first Athlete Represen- tative on the FEI Executive Board, Lambis Nikolaou, Chairman of the IOC Culture and Education Commis- sion, and international graphic design specialists.

The new pictograms, unveiled today at the FEI General Assembly in Turkey’s capital Istanbul, sport bright colours to embody the passion and vitality of equestrian and depict the unique relationship between human athletes and their horses. The pictograms, which will be used by the FEI, its 133 National Federations and organisers of FEI competitions around the world, were inspired by the winning entry of an international design competition launched on the FEI’s Facebook page and website.

The competition attracted 85 submis- sions from 17 coun- tries, with entries coming from equestri- an enthusiasts, ath- letes and designers aged between 15 and 74 years old.

vidual competition and played an essential role in securing the Swedish team’s silver medal.

“The submissions for our online design competition were over- whelming, and they demonstrated perfectly just how wide the interest and participation in equestrian sport is currently,” said FEI President HRH Princess Haya.

“As a rider, I know how the pictograms should appear, the correct proportions, the connection and the movement. I’m really happy to have done this and I’m proud that my designs were chosen,” said Peder Fredricson, who started out in Event- ing, winning two gold medals as a junior at the 1989 European Champi- onships and finishing 14th in the 1992 Olympics. Since 2000, he has focused on Jumping, and in 2004 he made his Olympic début in Athens where he finished fourth in the indi-

“Peder Fredricson worked closely with us to further develop the fresh, new discipline icons which will now become an integral part of our identity, and which we hope will help our ever-increasing international audience to recognise each of our seven disciplines instantly.

“Equestrian sport has seen record growth worldwide, and given its rapidly growing popularity we expect the number of FEI competi- tions at all levels and on all continents to continue increasing, so now is the perfect time to launch our new sporting identity” Peder Fredricson received a prize pack- age including two VIP tickets to a top local FEI event, the latest iPad and an annual subscription to FEI TV, the FEI’s official video channel.

Ottawa, Ontario, Novem- ber 14, 2012-Dressage Canada is pleased to announce that Mary and Eric Brooks of Cedar Val- ley, ON, and Anne and John Welch of King City, ON, have been named as the 2012 Dressage Canada owners of the Year.

The Brooks and Welch families co-own Brookhaven Dressage Inc’s D Niro (D Day by Alitalia), a 13-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding that represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games with Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, ON. Jacqueline found D Niro in March 2011 and has already recorded a very impressive string of top 10 finishes in international Grand Prix competition. In 2012 alone, Jacqueline and the talented D Niro, were second in the Grand Prix Special at the WCD Spring Challenge and at CDI 3* Lexington. The pair also placed second in both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special at CDI 3* Burlington in May. They cemented their spot on the Canadian Team with victories in Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special Tests at the last qualifying event, the CDI 3* at Blainville. Following the Olympics, Jacqueline and D Niro debuted their new Grand Prix Freestyle to rave reviews and the top score of the evening at the presti- gious Dressage at Devon CDI-W.

“Years ago, in about 1999, when Gran Gesto was purchased for Jacquie, I was honoured when she asked me to remain a part owner and I was delight- ed,” said Anne Welch. “In the years following, Bal- moral and D Niro joined the ranks, and the best thing for John and me was being part of a superb team which is based on a grow- ing friendship with Mary, Eric and Jacquie and the support of so many people that soon became known as Team Brooks. It is a true privilege to be able to help an athlete achieve their dreams, let alone an Olympic one and while it has not always been easy, it

has been a great joy.” Welch added, “We are pleased to be named as Owners of the Year with the Brooks and thank Dres- sage Canada in their effort to highlight the importance of supporting our athletes. I encourage any and all dres- sage enthusiasts to find out how they can help our rid- ers achieve their goals - it is not always as difficult as it might seem and the rewards, though not mone- tary, are well worth it. It continues to be fun.”

“Little did we know more than 20 years ago when Jacqueline convinced us to support her Olympic dream by purchasing her first horse Finnegan, that horses and dressage were about to become a lifetime commitment,” said Mary Brooks, Jacqueline’s moth- er. “At that time we knew nothing about horses and even less about dressage. But we knew our daughter was a talented athlete and we wanted to help her achieve her goals.”

“Our ownership of Jacqueline’s horses has, and continues to be, quite a ride. It has taken us to a Pan Am Games, a WEG, a World Cup and two Olympics. We are very content and feel privileged to continue to share in Jacquie’s ongoing interna- tional competitive achieve- ments. With each new horse that comes into our lives, we, share the dream that the best is yet to be. We are pleased to be
