ENSURING HACKERS DO NO HARM TO HEALTH RECORDS
n April 2012, Kroll Associates, a global intelligence and in- formation management company, wrote about data breaches in electronic record-keeping in the health care industry. Kroll not- ed that human error remains the main factor behind the exposure of sensitive patient and hospital information. The report also said data loss also spiked due to “the proliferation of mobile devices in the workplace,” and because third parties that receive patient data have not moved quickly enough to ensure their digital defenses are more formidable.

Even implantable medical device can be compromised. Last September, the U.S. Government Accountability Office published a paper, “Medical Devices: FDA Should Expand Its Consider- ation of Information Security for Certain Types of Devices.” It

stated that plus/minus for patients when it revealed that “several information security threats exist that can exploit vulnerabilities in active implantable medical devices, but experts caution that efforts to mitigate information security risks may adversely af- fect device performance.”
All of which concerns Cathy Beech. She is the chief infor- mation security officer at The Children’s Hospital of Philadel- phia (CHOP). Her bio cites, among other things, her responsi- bility for information security program management including governance and regulatory compliance, risk management, threat and vulnerability awareness and security administration. These measures are important because, Beech says, “No one wants to endure the pain of identity theft, fraud or the breach of an individual’s privacy around his/her health.” Being thorough and organized is like breathing to Beech. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Rutgers Univer- sity with a focus on accounting, and is a certified information systems auditor (CISA) and certified in risk and information systems control (CRISC).
