The Welsh Part breds are also very successful: the Part Bred Pony has provided the majority of riding and show ponies for many years.
The Large Part Bred is establishing itself as an eventer, for dressage and showjumping and as an all round riding horse.

The general character is the embodiment of strength, hardiness and agility.
The head shows great quality with pony character – bold prominent eyes, a broad forehead and neat, well set ears.
The body must be deep, on strong limbs with good joints and an abundance of flat bone.
Action must be straight, free and forceful, the whole foreleg extending from the shoulders and as far forward as possible in all paces with the hocks well flexed, producing powerful leverage.
The Welsh Cob is a superb performance animal.
Welsh ponies and cobs excel in all disciplines being excellent under saddle and for driving, and have been exported all over the world.

Their flair and beauty as well as their hardiness and versatility have long been recognised as borne out by their continuing popularity as a mount for any child or adult.
The South Western Association, covering Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, was founded in November 1969 and since then has striven to promote Welsh ponies and cobs and their part-breds in the region.

The diverse and fascinating history of the Welsh Ponies and Cobs give them a special place in the rich British heritage of native ponies, and indeed they have been used in the past to influence some of the other native breeds of these islands.
In addition, clinics, visits to studs in the area and in Wales, young handler and young judges competitions, and annual points schemes both for performance and in hand are also organised.
