Galliford Try, the Uxbridge-based housebuilder and construction group, revealed revenues of £1.5 billion (up 17%) in its latest annual returns, which also showed pre-tax profits up 80% at £63.1m.

The news helped the share price to a 15% hike, the best rise during September of any large or medium-sized stock exchange company based in the Thames Valley.

Chief executive Greg Fitzgerald commented: “Against a background of challenging and uncertain economic conditions I am very pleased to report that we have exceeded the objectives of our three-year transformational housebuilding plan, delivering a substantial increase in profits and return on capital. In addition, we have maintained a high-quality construction order book. We

have a strong balance sheet and a disciplined growth strategy with a clear focus on improving margins that positions us well to deliver further profitable growth in the new financial year and beyond.”

As usual, the highest gains were found among the smaller groups with sub-£50m turnover, top honours going to Slough-based Corac Group which carries out research and development and supply products to a range of engineering sectors.

Interim results were said to be “in line with management expectations for the year as a whole”. Revenues totalled £4.26m (compared to £0.19m in 2011), with the latest additions to the group – Wellman Hunt Graham and Wellman Defence for a total of £10.91m in April – both continuing to perform strongly.
