The port of Southampton handled two of

the largest and newest

containerships simultaneously on 20 August when Hapag-Lloyd’s 13,000teu-plus Hamburg Express and UASC’se similarly-sized Jebel Ali berthed in tandem at the DP World terminal. The Port of Southampton has started redevelopment work to

cement its ability to handle multiple numbers

of Associated next-generation

container ships. Both ships were welcomed by British Ports in

(ABP)’s port director Southampton

Doug Morrison and DP World Southampton’s managing director, Chris Lewis. Mr Lewis said, “This is an historic

occasion for the terminal, and one that illustrates how Southampton is geared up to handle these gigantic vessels. Against this exciting backdrop, we aim to be the container terminal of choice for customers in the UK.” Mr Morrison said, “These giant container vessels,

with all the economies of scale they bring, are

predicted to account for more than half of the capacity of the world’s total container fleet by 2015. Shipping lines are drawn to Southampton because our location means a minimum deviation from the main shipping lanes, offering their customers faster transit times. This means that we are often the first and last port of call in and out of Northern Europe.”

Priority Freight acquires Heathrow forwarder

Dover-based urgent transport

specialist Priority Freight has acquired Heathrow specialist air cargo forwarder AWLI Group. The Dover company described

the purchase as “a logical strategic move” in its mission to become the principal provider of time critical and expedited freight services to multiple industry sectors and across diverse geographies. Transition of AWLI staff, operations

and customer services to Priority Freight will be completed over the coming three months. Commenting on the investment,

Andrew Austin, Priority Freight’s CEO said, “Critical to the success of our business is a hands-on approach, whereby our people are in total control of each shipment, all hours of

the day and every step of the way. We will integrate the known expertise of AWLI to help maintain this control at a critical hub, Heathrow and within the crucial function of air cargo forwarding.” Group managing director of

Priority Freight, Neal Williams added: “While our day-to-day challenges involve delivering customers’ freight under time critical and/or complex supply chain conditions, we are increasingly acting as 4PL’s; managing a customer’s planned-for programme of what is now called expedited contingency logistics. Having our own specialist expedited air freight division at Europe’s busiest airport in addition to various professional partners at our disposal, gives us an added degree of flexibility.”

Felixstowe freight firm on the move

Independent forwarder Jordon Freight has expanded from its current central Felixstowe offices to a site closer to the Port of Felixstowe and the local Customs offices. Director Jon Swallow, said: “This

is a great move for us as we are purchasing the 2,013 sq ſt unit in Schneider Close, which allows us to really drive forward our planned future expansion of the company. Road access for trailers directly to our premises, as well as being moments away from the port and Customs, will all be hugely advantageous to our operations.” At the same time, Jordon Freight

has promoted Donna Begg to office manager “in recognition of her exemplary performance and dedication.” Previously export road freight manager, in her new role she will organise all office operations and procedures. Fellow director, Roddy Forster,
