Volume 7 Number 1 Around Hampton Roads Chesapeake Celebrates “First Fueling” Norfolk’s Emergency GIS Mapping Tool
at Compressed Natural Gas Station CHESAPEAKE - Chesapeake will unveil its first compressed natural gas (CNG) time fill station with a special “First Fueling” event on Friday, September 7, at 9:00 a.m. The event will take place behind the Waste Management building at 901 Hollowell Lane. Chesapeake Mayor Alan P. Krasnoff will perform the ceremonial “First Fueling” of a City waste management truck.
The compressed natural gas time fill station will fuel the City’s CNG-equipped waste trucks, saving the City nearly $12,600 in fuel costs per truck each year. Compressed natural gas is a domestic fuel and is safer for the environment as compared to gas and diesel. Converting one diesel truck to CNG is equivalent to taking 300 gas powered automobiles off the road.
For additional information about the CNG vehicles or the “First Fueling” event, contact Public Works Information Specialist Elizabeth Vaughn at 382-6983 or EVuaghn@CityOfChesapeake. net.

Wins a Governor Technology Award A mapping tool that has greatly improved Norfolk’s ability to respond to disasters has been awarded a Governor’s Technology Award. Created in house, STORM (System to Track, Organize, Record, and Map) is a web based system used to collect information and map incidents during severe weather events. The system was designed to help centralize and standardize data collection during and after a storm, while also providing live mapping updates to the public. The system is designed for easy data entry, to eliminate duplication, to provide reporting on both current and historical events, and to be able to export data in different formats.
“From an emergency management / disaster response perspective, STORM allows the ability to collect and manage critical information in a timely manner,” said James Redick, director of Norfolk Emergency Preparedness and Response. “This technology has improved not only our situational awareness at the local level, but by (GIS supervisor) Fraser Picard’s sharing of the
program, the region as well.”

with UAVs Event TUESDAY: September 11, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Air and Space Center in downtown Hampton, Virginia. Free (no reservations).
UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are currently on the aeronautics frontier. Former NASA Langely employee Steve Sliwa will present a case study of the development, introduction, and operations of what was a new class of UAV system. Sliwa was the CEO of Insitu leading it from 4 employees to over 850 employees with sales over $450 million. Insitu developed and operated the ScanEagle and Integrator UAVs in services which have logged over 800,000 hours of flight operations mostly in support of military operations around the world. Sliwa will describe some of the key contributors to success including the technical and business model breakthroughs (and, in some cases, luck) that fueled the growth and led to the sale to Boeing in 1998.
Dr. Sliwa was CEO of Insitu from 2002 through early 2011. During that time Insitu grew from 4 employees to 800+ employees and $400M in revenue. Insitu is a developer of miniature robotic airplanes or UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for the military and civilian applications. Within Insitu’s market niche, it has a 90% market share with customers and operations throughout the world. Insitu provides UAVs and support equipment but also executes a thriving business model delivering intelligence through turn-key solutions.
Prior to Insitu, Dr. Sliwa had a varied career that included serving as research manager at NASA, founder of an educational software company, VP of Product Development for Silicon Valley engineering-software company, and President of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Dr. Sliwa has engineering degrees from Princeton, George Washington, and Stanford and a business degree from Stanford. He resides in White Salmon, WA with his wife Nancy and enjoys flying.

Suffolk Tabbed as One of America’s
Best Places to Live for Job Growth SUFFOLK, VA The City of Suffolk’s motto “It’s a Good Time to Be in Suffolk” could very well be changed to “It’s a Good Time to Work in Suffolk”. CNN Money Magazine has named Suffolk the 9th best community in its Best Places to Live Top 25 List of “Where the Jobs Are” for 2012. Using statistics from 2000 to 2011, Suffolk demonstrated strong job growth with a 43% increase during that time frame. Only areas which were experiencing job and population growth and where unemployment was below the national average were considered.
One of the main reasons cited for the job growth in the City of Suffolk were the Navy’s decision to move four commands (Naval Network Warfare Command, NNWC Global Network Operations Center Detachment, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, and Navy Cyber Forces) into the U.S. Joint Forces Command site in Northern Suffolk. The result is over 1,300 new jobs coming to Suffolk.
Quality of life, schools, transportation, and community were additional areas noted which help recruit business and industry to locate in Suffolk. A growing retail sector along with expansion in the manufacturing and warehousing presence were also highlighted.
Mayor Linda Johnson noted, “This distinction is the product of hard work and determination to build Suffolk into an attractive place for business. When the pending closure of JFCOM was announced, the City created a plan consisting of three “R’s”--- reject, retain and replace. The movement of the four commands to the City complete the “replace” process. We are excited that
others have seen what Suffolk has to offer and have decided to call our City home.”

“Celebrate My Drive” Uses Research to
Keep Teens Safe Behind the Wheel State Farm announces new approach to teen driver safety at local celebration
Celebrate My Drive is one special day for the Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads community to rally around and support teens everywhere as they learn to drive and get ready for the road ahead. Thousands of teens in hundreds of communities everywhere, including Virginia Beach, will gather on Sept. 15 to celebrate the milestone of getting a driver’s license and committing to staying safe. This event will take place on at 3101 Va. Beach Blvd. Ste. 112 Va. Beach, Va. (Rose Hall Shoppes) from 10am to 1pm.
As a result of nearly a decade of research, State Farm is changing the conversation and debuting a new, more-positive approach to teen driver safety. A 2008 analysis of nearly 30 different studies found that positive messages are more engaging long term to the message recipient. Focusing on what teens can do empowers teens and holds promise in breaking through with today’s young motorists. Crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens, and the first year of driving is the most dangerous. As the nation’s leading auto insurer, State Farm is committed to preventing teen crashes, reducing injuries and saving lives.
