independent republic, though officially a part of the Republic ofAzerbaijan. TheArmenians still have an uneasy peacewith theAzerbaijanis. Fromamodern economic and political perspective, Armenia has few resources compared to its neighbors, Azerbaijan and Georgia.


The Armenian Diaspora Today, about half the world’s Armenians live outside Armenia. Armenian


communities have emerged in theMiddle East,Russia, Poland,Western Europe, India and North America. The post-Communist Republic of Armenia has officially defined the Armenian nation to include the far-flung diaspora. A common theme in Armenian discourse is the need to preserve the culture and heritage of theArmenian people through education andmobilization of younger members of the community. In this task, the Republic of Armenia enjoys the enthusiastic support of the international Armenian community, which sees a newopportunity to impart information to the rest of theworld aboutArmenian culture – and especially to rectify perceived inattention to the tragedy of 1915.
