built by Lawley’s. She is getting a new coat of paint and varnish.

The also did some work on a Gus Skoog built tuna boat from back in the 1950s. As for the trucking business, that has been picking up and should stay busy now right into the winter.

Portland Yacht Service hauled MATAU to repair her keel. Story below.

Portland Yacht Services (PYS) in Portland has made an agreement with CB Marine for use with an option to buy their 1,500-ton dry-dock. PYS will do all the marketing and labor for the work that goes into the drydock. The dry-dock 120 feet in length and 56 feet wide between the wing walls.

Currently in the dry-dock is the catama-

ran MATAU, which has a beam of 36-feet. She struck bottom in the Mussel Ridge Channel and damaged one of her keels. For- tunately the keel was designed to absorb and crush, thus there is no signifi cant structural damage. The owner called around and found out that CB Marine in Portland had a dry- dock that could easily handle a vessel with a 36-foot beam. The question is who else could handle a vessel with this much beam.

MATAU was lifted out of the water on the dry-dock and work began immediately. The keel is constructed of foam with ply- wood stringers covered with fi berglass. Her repairs will be completed by 26 July and will launch the following day. The use of this drydock signifi cantly in- creases the capacity in the State of Maine to attract larger yachts and commercial work, which is what PYS is looking to do.

Finestkind Boat Yard in Harpswell has had a busy winter and spring. Their big project from last year on ARI, a custom powerboat, carried over into this year, due to major problems with the engine. They have removed her Cummins diesel engine and are replacing it with an IVECO. In the shop is a Northeast Harbor A boat,

On a side note, the 38-foot wooden boat MELANIE JEAN, which is owned by Todd Hubbard of Ogunquit, brother of Mark Hubbard owner of Finestkind Boat Yard, is getting some major repairs in Ogunquit. All the deck beams have been replaced, as well as the planking on the washrails. They then refastened her hull and replaced about a half dozen planks. This was followed by replacing both sides of the trunk and house and the house top. Hopefully she will be out competing at the last few lobster boat races.

Pemaquid Marine in Pemaquid is still busy trying to get everything fi nished up for the summer.

They have a new Banks Cove 22 day boat that they are fi nishing up the fi berglass work on.

They have another Banks Cove 22 day boat in for a rebuild, which has spent the last four years shrink wrapped. She is about 12 years old and is fi tted with a jet drive with a inboard gas engine. This had a lot of issues and never did run properly so this has all been removed.

Both of the above boats are scheduled

to be done in August. A 12 year old Banks Cove 22 was in for some work, This included a total canvas enclosure of the cockpit, a hard back to the

house with a teak door, and redid the seating. A 22-foot Friendship Sloop, built by

McKie Roth Jr. of Westport in 1973, has had keel work, engine reinstalled and paint. She is scheduled to go over in August.

Rockport Marine in Rockport has re-launched the William Fife-designed and built ADVENTURESS following a three- year restoration. The 1924 schooner was returned to the waters of Rockport Harbor on Saturday 21 July, in Rockport Marine Park amid hundreds of onlookers. At a celebration following the launching to com- memorate ADVENTURESS’s restoration, the staff of Rockport Marine announced the yacht’s upcoming schedule where the public will be invited to view her.

ADVENTURESS arrived at Rockport Marine in 2009 and was only to have her decks replaced. As the carpenters removed the deck, they discovered signifi cant areas of rot. ADVENTURESS’s owner then com- missioned a full restoration. While she had received substantial restorations over her lifetime, Rockport Marine’s restoration is her most complete one to date.

“Few yachts are ever lucky enough to

benefi t from a restoration as meticulous as that of ADVENTURESS,” says Rockport Marine’s president, Taylor Allen. “The Rockport Marine team truly embraced this project. The completed yacht is a testament to the pride and craftsmanship of each in- dividual who had a hand in ADVENTUR- ESS’s restoration.”

ADVENTURESS retained her original teak planking above the waterline, but her deteriorated backbone was completely re- placed. The double-sawn frames, which are dovetailed into the keel, were also replaced. Her corroded steel fl oors were replaced with custom fabricated bronze fl oors, which should last for hundreds of years. She has all new deckhouses and furniture crafted out of teak and a raised panel interior crafted by Rockport Marine out of English Wal- nut. Martha Coolidge styled the interior, choosing fi xtures and fabrics that would harmonize with the aesthetic of the boat. ADVENTURESS is returning to the sea rigged once again as a schooner after many years of sailing as a ketch. The masts are laminated Sitka spruce with custom bronze mast hardware fabricated by Joel Cox. Carpenter Ian Bruce drew each piece of hardware by hand using museum archives,
