ttt from the publisher's desk STATEMENT OF PURPOSE We Lost a Friend Joshua Nelson, 57, died June 4, 2012 Publishers W Karen Tappenden

e are very sad to report that Josh Nelson suddenly collapsed on his farm Sunday, June 3. Friends working with him that day on the farm called an ambulance and he was rushed to Rutland Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on June 4. Josh had been preparing to leave that Monday morning for San Diego to attend the Sustainable Brands Innovation Open, visit his grown daughter Dana in northern California, and then start the 6-week Unreasonable Institute fellowship in Boulder, Colorado.

As many of you know, Josh had been a contributor to Holistic Horse for many years and was the reason we created the Environmental Hoofprint department. Josh

was a pioneer, inventor and advocate for the safety and health of the planet. I first met Josh in college where he was fresh from travels to Central and South America learning Spanish and experiencing other cultures. He was involved with the research and development of cattle breeding while always being a horse person. In more recent years he explored ways to help third world countries while providing us in the US with innovative, economic and environmental products, like Coir which he imported and explored as bedding for small animals and as an alternative for peat moss. (Coir is a natural fiber extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes, mattresses, etc.)

Joshís best known invention was the Wash Wand, a unique attachment for a garden hose to help wash horses and dogs. He went on to develop other products, including a composting kit that reclaims heat in your house to reduce your carbon footprint. He was always happy to share his knowledge, evidenced by his worm casting business he created to teach young children about life cycles and ways to fertilize the land without chemicals.

He lived a diverse and interesting life. His daughter Dana is a true testament to how wonderful a person he was. He is greatly missed.
