Sitting
Garden furniture
If you have had your garden furniture for more than ten years, then it’s about time you started looking around to replace because it must surely be showing signs of wear and tear, and will certainly be out of date.
Gardening can be an exhausting activity and the first thing you want to do after all your hard labours is to sit in the garden, relax and enjoy the results.
There is now in the shops, an impressively massive selection of chairs, seats and tables. They can range from simple deck or ‘film director’s’ type chairs with canvas seating, to seats offering near lounge type, fully upholstered comfort.
There is also an enormous selection of benches available,
solidly constructed from quality (and said to be sustainable) hardwoods, such as Kapur and Acacia.
They are all hardwearing enough to withstand the variety that is the British weather, global warming notwithstanding.
They come in various designs, both for seats and the backs, and will usually seat at least three people quite comfortably.
Also there is a great choice to be had of garden tables and chairs made from wood and metals like cast aluminium, so that you can enjoy light meals and entertaining out in the garden on sunny days.
Pine picnic bench/tables, like those seen outside many pubs, are ideal for four or more to take refreshment sitting together. These are extremely reasonably priced.

of a table, and a mixture of both bench type seating and individual chairs, made in quality hardwood or metal, can cost as little as £250.
And for the classical look, there are wicker outdoor furniture sets which with modern technology, are both water and UV resistant, and can be kept outside without treatment.
All these garden sets look very inviting on both lawn and patio. So attractive is this furniture indeed, that some people have chosen it for their main dining room.

6 CORNISH GARDENER - summer 2012
For more relaxation, perhaps a swinging garden seat may be just what you want? Accommodating two to four people they are also made from either hardwood or metal are finished with a range of patterned, weatherproof cushioning.
For the really lazy person, a hammock must offer supreme comfort. They are reasonably priced from about £35. Hammocks can be erected between two convenient trees or, for the treeless garden, will come with their own supporting stand.
To complete your garden furniture, why not consider a gazebo and/or
arbour. Gazebos provide shade when required, are easily erected, and ideal for summer parties or for sheltered eating if placed near to a barbeque area.
Arbours provide bench seating within a surrounding frame that allows climbing plants to grow up the sides and over the top. Seating can be rigid or swinging, and at prices from under £200, must represent the bargains of all time.
Lighting and heating are other aspects of garden living that are now being catered for. You will find battery, gas and liquid fuel operated lighting equipment that will make those late, dusky evenings comfortable and viable. For the chillier spring and autumn evenings there are even patio heaters available.
All this equipment is available from garden centres and suppliers and if you have a look round you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Your garden is an important part of home living, and as well as growing a wonderful selection of fragrant, colourful and/or edible plants, you also owe it to yourself and your family, to furnish it as well as you would any (other) room in your house.
