292 A collection relating to Bill Roberts a member of the British gold medal winning 4x400m athletics team at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, including his gold medal winner’s diploma for the 4 x 400m relay, now lacking one of the boards from the presentation folder, paper loss top left-hand corner, the mount grubby; a period photograph of the Great Britain team inside the Olympic Village, and various medals and fobs won during his athletics career including two Oxford Universities Athletics Club medals; a medal believed to be a second prize medal (silver & enamel) for the 4x400m relay at the 1946 European Athletics Championship, together with a bronze participant’s medal and a white metal lapel badge; two Northern Counties Athletics Association; and a participant’s badge from the 1938 British Empire Games (10)


Bill Roberts (1912-2001) was born at Salford and showed his potential by winning the 400m at the 1935 British AAA Championship, following up on a silver at the 1934 British Empire Games. At the 1936 Berlin Games Bill Roberts narrowly missed out on a medal finishing fourth in the 400m, but his fortunes changed as the third member of the GB 4x400m team that won gold in the relay. Roberts would also win gold at the 1938 Empire Games. In retirement from athletics he worked as a columnist with the Manchester Evening News. £1,500 - 2,000
