■ Constant Star, a.k.a. Star, has been off the track since age two and has been in training with Kimberly Gowdwin Clark, the founder of Thoroughbred Placement Resources, at Leighton Farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland since the fall of 2011. The average wait list to get into the farm is usually about 30 horses. The farm is owned by William Clark and he donates its use to the charity. “Constant Star is a representative of Maryland and the

exceptional Thoroughbreds produced here,” says Kimberly. Making it to this point is somewhat of a miracle since Maryland is one of the states that does not have any form of retirement program for their racehorses leaving the track. Thoroughbred Placement Resources, Inc. not only facilitates the placement of an average 150 horses per year, most of them Maryland racehorses, but also assists if the placement isn’t working out. In essence this organization was able to catch this “falling star.” “I took her to Jim Wofford and David Loman; both agreed she

■ Nicole Orens is an adult amateur with a small farm on Eastern Long Island. She came in contact with Dutch Warmblood breeder Karin Jimenez of Sporting Chance Farm in Coatesville, Pennsylvania when she first began looking for a jumper project a few years back. “I am not a breeder or a trainer— just someone looking for an athletic prospect located in the northeast,” she explains. “I only have this one horse who would be eligible, so I figured

since she met the Madden’s specifications, why not make a video and send in her entry? While she is little, she has a ton of jump and, if she won, who couldn’t benefit from a program such as the Maddens? I never imagined, though, that she’d be chosen as a semi-finalist out of all the entries—and I feel like she’s already won just making it this far!” Charmed will be for sale eventually, but for now, Nicole says, she hopes to have fun on her in the jumper ring and help her become the best possible jumper she can be.

■ Rebecca Galbraith of November Hill Farm in Keswick, Virginia has been breeding horses for about 16 years. She had enjoyed riding and competing mostly in the jumpers before that and started by breeding a special mare that she had competed on. Since then she has bred five other mares through the years that she felt were exceptional athletes with good pedigrees and conformation. Her goal is to produce sound, athletic horses for the jumper ring. Coral Key was the last foal out of Galbraith’s mare Kannieke.

“All of her other foals ended up being great jumpers,” she says. “The first three were quite large, so I bred Kannieke to the Thoroughbred Coconut Grove hoping for a lighter, more American-type ride. Coral and her full sister Bali Ha’i have really turned out that way.” Rebecca started riding Coral last summer and says even at

was special,” Kimberly continues. “A volunteer for TPR suggested we nominate her to the Breeder’s Bridge Contest, and Sharon White offered to help us develop a video to represent Star. Tim Bourke, a fantastic rider at Last Frontier Farm, agreed to ride her. He had been on her in the past and was a perfect fit. Thus her fantastic demo video was produced.”
