A message from PEF Retirees President Jim Carr Get to know PEF Retirees leaders, staff It’s a privilege to be your president
of PEF Retirees, and to serve with a board of outstanding, dedicated, hardworking (volunteer) leaders who are your elected chapter presidents. We advocate for retiree concerns
such as protecting well deserved secure retirements and pensions, affordable, quality health insurance, and the Social Security and Medicare safety nets for seniors. Please visit the PEF website at
pef.org and select the retirees’ link to learn about your chapter presidents and statewide officers. Although PEF Retirees chapters
don’t meet over the summer, you will have some opportunities to meet and interact with PEF Retiree leaders and activists. PEF Retirees will hold its sixth
annual leadership conference July 31 and August 1 at the Adams Mark in Buffalo. We bring PEF Retirees members together from across the state to discuss retiree chapter
business, and share ideas to help us better advocate for seniors. This year we have

invited some dynamic speakers including state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, who heads the state retirement system, U.S. Representative Kathy Hochul, Buffalo NAACP President Frank Mesiah, professor Eric
Kingson of Syracuse University who is co-director of Social Security Works, and PEF Legislative Director Brian Curran. If you go to the New York State
Fair in Syracuse this August, stop at the PEF booth and say hello. The booth will be staffed by volunteers from PEF Region 4, including many of our retirees. Delegates to the PEF Convention in
mid-October will have an opportunity to meet us at the PEF Retirees booth
at that event, which will also be held in Syracuse. We encourage you to stop by and meet us and we hope you will join us when you, too, retire. Remember, as state workers and
retirees, we are affected by what happens in Albany and Washington. “Calling for smaller government is
essentially a meaningless idea, because what Americans need is not smaller government but a government that does what it is supposed to do.” You may be surprised to learn that
quote is from Harry Jaffa, 93, who wrote Barry Goldwater’s acceptance speech at the 1964 GOP Convention. Government must work for all the people, not just the richest 1 percent.
