Plenty of Miners recognized


with PHL postseason honors By Brian McDonough


A


fter another outstanding season in the North American Prospects Hockey League (PHL), a number of players on the Pikes Peak Miners’ 18U team


were honored with postseason awards last month. Forward Alec Butcher and defenseman Jake Townsend were named to


the All-PHL First Team, while forwards Kirk Van Arkel and Josh Haver- strom were named to the Second Team. Butcher, from Anchorage, won the PHL’s 18U


division scoring title with 43 points (19 goals) in 22 games. Haverstrom (14 goals, 38 points) and Van


Arkel (16 goals, 37 points), both Colorado Springs natives, finished Nos. 2-3 respectively in league scoring. Townsend (Highlands Ranch) totaled 15 points (seven goals) from the Miners’ blue line. “These guys have worked extremely hard and

are very deserving of these awards,” said Miners 18U coach Greg Vanover, whose team finished in second place in its PHL division with a 16-5- 1 regular-season record. “I’m proud of all of these guys as they continue to persevere towards their goals, on and off the ice.”


In addition, forwards Colin Staub (Colorado Springs), Justin Tutag


(Centennial) andRichard Wigton (Centennial), along with defenseman Eric Miller (Kennewick, Wash.), were named to the All-PHL Academic Team. Se- lections had to hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher for the 2011-12 school year. “We’re doing everything we can as a program to continue to promote these


kids in their pursuit of getting to the next level,” added Vanover. Charter members of the PHL in 2009-10, the Miners’ 18U and 16U teams
