FROM THE EDITOR

Every year, I am amazed at how Black & Tan continues to grow. This year is no exception, in fact this is undoubtedly our biggest issue yet – a fact due in no small part to the team that brings you B&T. This year, we are pleased to welcome a number of new contributors and I know you will enjoy the different perspectives each of them brings. We have also grown behind the scenes as our team of three doubled to six with the addition of our new financial wizard, Dianna Texter (Bayside Manchester Terriers), and our two brand new Associate Editors, Dawn Saunders of Appletor ETTs and Leonie St. Clair, an avid Manchester Terrier fanatic from the UK. These three ladies join myself, our Advertising Co-ordinator, Aiko Shinseki (Aiko’s TMTs) and our graphic designer, Melissa Doldron.

Now, you may wonder why I am taking the time to single out each person. Aside from the fact that each has worked untold hours to bring you this wonderful magazine, this team also represents what international teams can accomplish. With 2 Canadians, 2 Americans and 2 Brits onboard, we have successfully collaborated in putting together a wonderful publication that will, ultimately, benefit Black & Tan breeders and owners around the world.

Never before has international cooperation been so important to the breeds we love. As Carolyn’s Horowitz’s feature on registration trends in the United States shows, in North America the breed continues to face real challenges that potentially threaten its long-term well-being. And this is not an isolated occurrence. With registrations plunging and breed sustainability at question in several countries, we as fanciers need to not only look at ways we can exchange dogs and information, but also at how our Breed Clubs can collaborate in tackling the issues we face. As representatives of fanciers in their countries, our breed clubs must take leadership roles in spearheading initiatives aimed at maximizing genetic diversity, protecting health and increasing the depleted numbers of active breeders. So, consider starting the conversation at your next Club meeting; there’s certainly no shortage of ideas and, in the end, many hands make light work.

In the meantime, spend a few hours with us reveling in everything Black & Tan! With articles on everything from Agatha Christie’s Manchester Terriers to the legendary Eaglespur Manchesters of Enid Teague Knight plus news and event coverage around the world, training and grooming tips and updated information on anesthetics to share with your vet, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone! We are particularly pleased to feature results to-date of the ongoing B&T Mortality Survey which will continue to track longevity and causes of death for Manchester Terriers and English Toy Terriers. And, of course, our issue wouldn’t be complete without a look back at British Manchester Terrier history on the occasion of the BMTC’s 75th Anniversary. We’re happy to say that all profits from this issue support BMTC activities celebrating this important milestone, which include the Kennel Club Art Exhibit and the 2012 European Manchester Terrier Happening to be held later this summer.

So, relax and enjoy, then consider making a

donation to show your appreciation and support a worthy cause. See you in 2013!
