HKTDC RAYMOND YIP

Welcome

On behalf of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), welcome to the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market 2012 (FILMART). The 16th edition of FILMART features some 640 exhibitors from 31 countries and regions, a new exhibitor record.

More than 5,200 buyers from over 50 countries and regions are expected to take part in the four-day event, from March 19-22.

I am pleased to welcome more than 30 group pavilions this year, including fi rst-time pavilions from Hungary, Mexico and Turkey, and the return of the Independent Film and TV Alliance from the US. Given that the Chinese mainland has just expanded its annual quota of foreign movies from 20 to 34, more US fi lm companies are likely to turn to the China market, using Hong Kong as their gateway. Indeed, this year’s US pavilion is 25% larger than last year’s, thanks to sponsorship under the Pacifi c Bridge Initiative.

Highlights this year include the return of the ACE Co-production Lab Hong Kong. About 20 Asian and European producers will participate in the four-day, project-based workshop organised by ACE-European Producer Network (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen). The European Union’s Media International, together with the Hong Kong – Asian Film Financing Forum, and the HKTDC, are lending support to the lab, which will offer panel discussions, market presentations, individual pitching and consulting sessions.

A series of FILMART thematic conferences will also take place, spotlighting four topical themes: digital entertainment, new media, Asian TV programming, and screenwriting and the growth of Asian themes.

FILMART is part of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong, the region’s annual leading entertainment industry gathering. This year’s expo presents nine multimedia events covering fi lm, television, digital entertainment and music.

I wish you all the best of business at FILMART 2012 and a rewarding stay in Hong Kong.
