Leeds GENERATION

With just over a year before the opening of Trinity Leeds, A1 hears of its progress

top 10 busiest streets, Briggate, and its three floors will add more than 120 shops and restaurants to the city. Set to transform shopping in the North, the development will create more than 3,500 new jobs for the region and is expected to provide a seismic shift in Leeds’ retail offer. Land Securities development director for Trinity Leeds Andrew Dudley explains: “Until now, Leeds has been under- provided in retail terms in comparison to all of the other major cities in the UK.” Indeed, the development will take Leeds from 7th to 4th place in the UK retail hierarchy as befits its 5.6 million resident catchment. This put Leeds in the top four UK destinations just behind London’s West End, Glasgow and Birmingham. The scheme is 65% pre-let more than a year before opening. Retail leasing director John Grimes reports: “Over half

the retailers we signed are new to the city, and many others are taking bigger and better space. Our aim is to provide a large number of retailers with quality space in the middle

s the only large retail development under construction in the UK at the moment, Trinity Leeds is vital to the whole industry. But as its opening nears, it is becoming more obvious how important it will be to the

of the prime city centre; with our new excellent food and leisure offer to significantly expand the night-time economy in Leeds.” Mango, Hollister, Cult and Superdry are just some of the

retailers new to the city, and others such as Next and Marks & Spencer are moving to bigger units or extending their stores. Next is tripling its space in the city and Marks & Spencer’s 155,000 sq ft store will anchor the scheme. “We will be creating a real wow factor with our approach to

digital media, architectural treatment, signage, our public art programme as well as working with our retailers to create the next concept flagship shops,” Dudley says. Primark, one of the retailers that is expected to be a significant driver of footfall to the scheme, will act as a gateway for shoppers arriving from Leeds railway station. The station is the third busiest in the UK (outside of London) and delivers more than 90,000 people through its doors everyday. The leisure element is exciting too (see our full leisure

feature on p14). Trinity Leeds will see the opening of the first Everyman cinema outside of London, as well as an eclectic mix of dining options. Grimes says: “Adjoining the four- screen cinema will be a cluster of quality family dining offers such as Carluccio’s, Yo! Sushi, Giraffe and Handmade Burger Co – while D&D London, the Conran brand, is taking 12,000 sq ft in two distinct offers, a white-linen offer and a bar and restaurant.”
