57 years of Rotary Music 57 years of Rotary Music
This year, our local Rotary Music Festival celebrates their 57th festival, promoting music and the arts in our community. The event increases in popularity each year and has become a household name which stirs many memories for generations of parents and children in Medicine Hat and area. “We are reaching 125 brand new registrants just this year”, says Anne Carrier, executive director. Classical musical components are showcased from all ages and formally adjudicated in various age ranges and categories. These include choral, vocal, musical theatre, speech arts, woodwind/brass, string, classical guitar, piano and music composition.
Research continues to support music and the arts in many aspects of children’s lives. Recent fi ndings in choral research specifi cally, ascertain that children in choirs get signifi cantly better grades in school than kids who have never been part of a choir, (according to their parents). Large majorities even say that their child’s performance in English, language arts, and math has improved after their child has started to participate in a choir and other music disciplines. Young musicians are reported (by their parents) to be better team players, have more advanced social skills, are more likely to participate in other extracurricular activities. They become more engaged in their school and community. The list of benefi ts goes on.
Better performance in math, reading and independent thinking are linked to come from the visual, auditory, spacial, sequencing, memory, re-arranging ideas, and directional awareness skills that music helps to develop.
“Music helps children to defi ne a standard of excellence, recognize excellence in the works of others, and achieve excellence in their own performance notes” states Val Brower, Music Literacy Coordinator with the Medicine Hat College Conservatory.
