Forth Ports owner Otter Ports Holdings has acquired the remaining 67% share of Tilbury Container Services (TCS) from DP World and Associated British Ports in a cash transaction. Forth Ports has

been a one-third shareholder in TCS since 1998. Forth Ports chief executive

Charles Hammond, commented: “With 100% ownership of TCS we plan to combine our existing Short

sulphur rules, says ferry group

Trade association Interferry is warning that operators

in

northern Europe face a near- impossible choice in trying to meet the 2015 deadline for ultra-low sulphur emissions from bunker fuel. It said that the legislation would also lead to a shift from short-sea to overland transport. Under pending IMO and soon

to be agreed European Union environmental requirements, vessels operating in the Baltic, North Sea and Channel Emission Control Areas will have to comply with a 0.1% limit on fuel sulphur content. Interferry says however that the 2015 timescale is ‘mission impossible´. None of the options

suggested by the European

Commission are suitable, it adds – for example LNG fuel is only an option for new vessels due to the prohibitive cost of converting existing ships, and in any case the LNG fuel supply infrastructure is inadequate. Nor is scrubber technology miracle

a cure - a new

Interferry feasibility study covering 108 vessels from six leading operators reveals that scrubbers would not be technically or financially viable for 60% of the existing fleet. Furthermore, trial installations among association members have shown that it will not be possible to have scrubbers in operation in time for 2015 for the other 40%.

Dover Terminal 2 plans approved

The Government has formally given the green-light to the port of Dover’s planned second ferry terminal (Terminal 2). The trust port, which is also in the middle of a privatisation plan, said that the £400 million scheme would go ahead “when market conditions require its construction” and would effectively double capacity. It added: “The decision is a clear sign that the Government expects traffic through this key gateway to increase substantially beyond the current recession.” The decision also allows a

waterfront development plan to move ahead.

development,

Director of port Mike

Krayenbrink, who managed the master planning process added: “The scale and detail of consultation that has been undertaken at all levels over the past few years has been unprecedented. It is a clear indication of how seriously we take our responsibility to develop the Port both as a national asset and as a key part of the local community.” Terminal 2 will be the single

biggest development ever by Dover Harbour Board and will become the second biggest ferry terminal in the UK after Dover’s existing ferry terminal in the Eastern Docks.

Sea container terminal with TCS to create a new container business branded ‘London Container Terminal’. The combined terminal will handle close to half a million containers and makes us the third largest single container operation in the UK and one

of the few UK ports servicing both deep sea and short sea customers. This acquisition further underlines Tilbury’s role as a distribution and transhipment hub for London.” DP World’s senior-vice

president for Europe, Flemming Dalgaard added:

7 Forth Ports takes control in Tilbury

“The offer from Forth made good sense to us and the decision was taken in line with the changing market dynamics in the liner industry including the rapid escalation in vessel sizes. DP World will continue to focus on our other UK businesses in DP World

Southampton and at London Gateway.” Chief executive of ABP Peter

Jones said his company would in future focus on its 21 directly owned ports, principally as landlord but also as operator where this will deliver stronger growth in key trades.”
