Summer Celebration The Party Moves to Rancho Murieta
By Stacie Campuzano A celebration is a public display of festivi-
ties to honor or regard to something held in esteem. In the case of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association Summer Celebration, the wonderful American Quarter Horse is the show- case. The show, a true celebration is a six day display of the versatility and beauty of the Quarter Horse. The 2011 Summer Celebration
was held June 28th – July 3rd. New for this year, was the venue. In prior
years, the event had been held at the fairgrounds inWatsonville. However, it was moved to its new location at the Murieta Equine Complex, or MEC, in Rancho Murieta, California just south of the capital of Sacramento. Show manager, DonnaWaddell stated, “MEC is doing an excel- lent job making itself one of the best places in California to host a horse show. They have plen- ty of RV hookups, easy pull through for large rigs, great arenas and the ability to allow us to start our classes early and end them late.” She went on to report that entries were up this year from 2010. Donna also has high hopes that as in years past when the show would go on to mid- night and beyond at its prior venue, it will once again at MEC. Even this year, cow horse events went on until 10pm! The cutters enjoyed the use of the fabulous new cutting pen at MEC. Given the three year contract they have with MEC to continue hosting the Summer Celebration, the cutters can look forward to using the pen again and again.

Management was happy with the decision
to change venues. “We lucked out,” Donna said with a chuckle. “It poured on Tuesday! But, because of the covered rings we were able to move things around and hold all our classes.” Though the weather was unusual for the Sacramento region, she knows the covered are- nas would be equally welcome for shade in the summer heat that is more normal for the region. Since MEC has plans for more covered arenas, she’s happy not to be worried about future rain outs.
Competitor Cece Campbell added that the
multiple covered areas including the new view- ing deck beneath the main covered ring allowed people to enjoy lunch and watch other events. “This isn’t usually a spectator event. But, they had nice tables set up in areas where it was easy to sit and watch other events. That was very nice,” said Campbell who competed in English classes, showmanship, and trail. Campbell also had praise for the management’s way of schedul- ing classes which allowed competitors like her- self who cross over into multiple disciplines to have time to prepare between classes. From one ring to the next, the variety of
traits of the quarter horse were displayed—the grace and elegance of a hunter horse, the glitz and glam of pleasure horses decked out in rhine- stones and silver, the speed and precision of rein- ing horses, and the raw power and cunning of the cutting horse. Quarter horses can do it all and the Summer Celebration put it on display for all to enjoy. Just to be sure everyone was having
fun, there were parties, a social and “Lucky Exhibitor” awards—product prizes given from sponsors like Cowboy Magic, Healing Tree, and others to random exhibitors. To celebrate their victories, winners walked away with cash prizes in every class. Next year, they plan to continue the cash prizes, the Lucky Exhibitor awards, and of course continue the tradition of rejoicing in the skills and talents of their American Quarter Horses at the event’s new home at the Murieta Equine Complex.
PierceWold & Ill Be A Little Smarter - 2011 PCQHA Summer Celebration Youth All Around
What was your favorite class to com- pete in during PCQHA Summer
Celebration and why? Pierce Wold: “During the PCQHA Summer Celebration I competed in 4 different events: Cutting, Reining, Pole Bending and Stake Race. This was the first time I showed my horse, Ill Be A Lil Smarter. He’s been with our family for 13 years but my mom and dad showed him. I was kind of nervous to show him at first, but as soon as I got into the show pen we were good. He was so much fun to show, especially in the Cutting - he’s really cowy. Even though I really loved the Cutting, I also loved showing him in the speed events.... so it is hard to say which event I love the most. I really like them all. I guess I’m lucky to have a horse I can do all the different events on.”
