Elizabeth Monroe, Ash Lawn- Highland will offer a tea presided over by Eliza Monroe and her friend Hortense. There will be a lesson in tea etiquette, language of the fan, a private tour and the crafting of a keepsake. $20 includes all materials. 2pm–4pm. Reservations required.


Virginia Festival of the Book, Mar 25 — Two noted authors will appear in the Ash Lawn-Highland Barn to discuss their recent writings and particpate in a book signing. 1:30pm, Professor David Holmes. 3pm, Robert Pierce Forbes.


Charlottesville GUIDE


Lewis & Clark explorer’s station, a hands-on archaeology space and experimentation with Jefferson’s favorite gadgets in the Griffin Discovery Room. Participants will receive a Monticello patch and “Jefferson Journal” to record the day’s discoveries. Bring lunch or purchase from the Monticello café. Please wear Girl Scout uniform or identifier. Tickets are non-refundable. Pre-registration is suggested. 10am-3pm. $15 active Girl Scouts/$17 adults.


Jefferson’s Birthday, Apr 13 — Monticello will mark the 269th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth with ceremonies on the grounds. 10am-11am. Free. Event details to be announced.


President James Monroe’s 253rd Birthday Day, Apr 28 — The day of celebration will include a birthday cake and afternoon refreshments for all local residents. The house will be open 9am-6pm, local residents will be admitted free from 3pm-6pm.


18th Annual Virginia WineFest, May 19-20 — Enjoy important Virginia vineyards, music, fine art, gourmet food, Monroe house tours and more. Admission charge includes wine glass and tastings. 11am-5pm. Reservations accepted.

Wine & Beer Tasting, Weekends — The General Store will offer selected Virginia wine and traditional brews for tasting each weekend day. The complimentary tasting will occur 1pm-4pm in the first floor Mill room. The General Store is open seven days a week, 9:30am-5:30pm.

Wine Festival at Monticello 2012, May 12 — Join us for an evening on the West Lawn of Monticello. Walk the restored vineyards and wine cellar, meet wine-maker Gabriele Rausse. Tickets include tours of Jefferson’s Monticello, live music on the West Lawn, and tastings of Virginia’s most celebrated local vintages. Maple Sugar Days, Mar 6-10 — The Wintergreen Nature Foundation is celebrating spring with the running of the sap. There will be field trips with schools and scouts, to hikes to see taps, trees and sap collection and, of course, a pancake breakfast. The breakfast is on Sat, March 10 from 8am-11am with real maple syrup over yummy pancakes. Proceeds go to support the Nature Foundation’s research and education programs. 434-325-8169.
