Marathon bid will help foster charity
AN Edenbridge man will be making a long held ambition come true when he takes part in the London Marathon in April.
Gareth Wilby, who lives in Hever Road with wife Keeley and baby daughter Megan, will be running to raise money for TACT (The Adolescent and Children’s Trust) after winning one of the eight places allocated to the charity.
Gareth’s mum Tina works
for TACT – the UK’s largest foster organisation – placing children with foster parents. “Running a marathon is something that I have always wanted to do even though I have never been a keen runner,” he explained. “It was just an ambition.
Gareth Wilby gets in some practice for the London Marathon
“I have applied for the last four years but failed to get a place – I did get one last year but it was only two months before the event and there was just not enough time to train. “TACT had eight places so I applied in September and found out I had a place just before Christmas. Not only will I be able to run a marathon but I will be helping out with something good as well.” Gareth began his gruelling 16-week training schedule on 1 January. Running around the lanes near his home in the early hours of the morning, he
completes three short to medium runs and one long run a week, which increases in distance as the marathon approaches.
If all goes well, he hopes to finish the marathon in less than four hours.
“The way I am going at the moment and my pace, I am on for completing it in about three hours 50 minutes,” he said. To participate in the marathon Gareth must raise at least £1,500 for his chosen charity.
He has already set up a Just Giving website, where people can log on to make a donation, and has collected money from friends and colleagues.
He plans to stage a number of fund raising events over the coming weeks including a bag pack at a local supermarket, a party featuring a raffle and tombola and a mini fete with games and a barbecue.
Civil engineer Gareth and
Keeley will also be climbing to the top of Snowden to raise money for TACT.
“I did the Three Peaks Challenge with colleagues but did not get to do Snowden,” he explained. “I just wanted to finish it off.” To make a donation go to

Players’ Jack was a ray of sunshine
WE may be in the dark depths of winter but the Oxted Player’s annual pantomime always manages to bring a bit of sunshine into the lives of weather weary residents. This year the team’s choice was the traditional fairy story of Jack and the Beanstalk and once again they excelled themselves in this all singing, all dancing exuberant show. Sophie MacTavish has in the past proved herself as a funny and capable actor and was excellent as the slightly soppy Jack, while Peter Calver really was as good as a professional dame in the role of the garishly dressed aunt Dottie. Such confidence and ability to ad lib in front of a live audience is rarely seen in an amateur production.
His outfits, wigs and hats were a feast for the eye too, as were those of all the cast, and congratulations must go to

everyone involved in the wardrobe department for their really amazing contribution. This year Vicki Stanbury gave up her principle boy’s breeches to play the lovely Anastasia and she looked every bit the princess with her golden tresses and stunning gowns.
Janette White was superb as the evil Egbertha, while Jonathan Tull was hilarious as Dim and Nicky Roberts outstanding as Dum. She managed to be extremely expressive without uttering a word throughout the whole performance! It was also a stroke of genius to put the giant played by Mark Mear on stilts, which really added to the overall magic of the show.
In short, it was a wonderful evening’s entertainment and one not to be missed – here’s to next year.

Trailblazing pensioner Reg Marchant has handed over £5,000 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – the proceeds of his incredible journey around the coast of Britain by mobility scooter. Reg suffers from post polio syndrome and set off on his Scoot4Life in spring last year, intent of visiting as many RNLI stations as possible aboard his trusty mode of transport. Accompanied by his wife Brenda and friend Brian Scott, the intrepid Edenbridge man completed a mindboggling 5,500-mile trek, visiting 150 lifeboat stations on the way. And in January Reg handed over the big cheque to coxswain Steve Warne at the lifeboat station in Hastings.
