Brian McVeigh BSc (Hons) GradIED Funky cones
One of the major projects of our fifth year within the DMEM department of Strathclyde University was a year long, team based
product development project. What made this project unique compared to others throughout the year, was that the team had to work to a brief provided by an external client and then work closely with that client throughout the duration of the project. This provided an experience similar to that of working within industry, with changing deadlines and demands for the project, as well as a greater deal of re deal of responsibility and real life effect, as the project outcome could have real implications for his company.

Our client was an organisation called Funky Moves Ltd, a young company founded by its managing director Ralf Klinnert. The main aim of the company is to provide a unique approach to physical exercise, by providing variious types of innovative activity games and sport and sports training products. Ralf appeared on Dragons Den in 2010 to promote his ‘Funky Cones’ products, a set of four electronic activity cones that could be set up in a range of ways to form the basis of a wide range of interactive games or training scenarios. He was successful and was offered a large investment.

Our brief initially involved finalising a new, unique design for the Funky Cones product, before in-depth manufacturing, sourcing and costing estimates were to be completed. The new design would have to be attractive, as well as contain a modular top (which would allow various buttons, lights or other accessories to be interchanged as needed). Cones also had to be able to be carried easily, as well as charged in a simple and efficient manner.

The project was broken down into three key milestones which had their own sets of objectives to be completed. This provided a basic structure to the project, as well as creating three distinct phases where we could provide feedback to our cl client. In addition, the team met with the client at least once a month, in order to allow the client to be as hands-on as he liked, as well as to all allow him to provide feedback on the work completed at that point.
