2011, the highest mobile ARPU for the region was found in Kuwait, with Lebanon and Qatar close behind. And while ARPU is falling in some countries, Kuwait and Lebanon among them, it is relatively stable in most of the region’s markets, and actually rising in a couple. Smartphone penetration will be key to

improving mobile ARPU, or stemming its de- cline. In 2011 Informa expects smartphone sales to represent 26.6 per cent of overall device sales, rising to 42.5 per cent by 2015. The corresponding volumes will see 13.95 million smartphone units sold in 2011, increasing to 28.59 million in 2015. Given the relatively low penetration

of fixed broadband services, and the relatively small size of most Middle Eastern markets, it is the second smallest global region in terms of internet traffic, ahead of only Africa. Informa has estimated that Middle Eastern users generated just over 1,500PB of traffic in 2010, and forecasts that this will rise to 12,809PB in 2015. Average internet traffic per user per month was low at 2.3GB in 2010, and will still lag much of the rest of the world despite an increase of more than 400 per cent to 10.6GB in 2015. Informa expects peer to peer file sharing

to generate the greatest volume of traffic in the Middle east through to 2015, followed by web browsing. Online storage will grow

faster than all other usage types between 2010 and 2015, accounting for the third larg- est share of traffic by 2015. VoIP services are also popular, although

they are banned or blocked in several Middle Eastern markets, Informa reports. It expects that, by 2015, 43 per cent of the region’s internet users will be using VoIP services, up from 17.5 per cent in 2010 But mobile will be the dominant means of

internet access in the region, especially as the number of smartphones increase over the next four years. ■
