THE WHYTE STUFF: Parents can dictate team’s success, failure
A
s the director of hockey opera- tions and a coach at the Desert
Youth Hockey Association, it’s im- perative we hold ourselves to higher standards and continuously work towards being positive role models in the lives of the players we mentor. What many people don’t stop
to think about, though, is that the 3-4 times a week us coaches spend around our players is nowhere near the amount of time they spend with their parents. As much knowledge and under-
standing a coach has to run their team effectively, the game plan can be completely negated by parents if they’re not on the same page. Every year, there are teams that
have certain parents who continu- ously “rock the boat” by trying to coach their own child, undermine the coaches or, even worse, create animosity amongst the families. Although it’s beneficial to keep the parents in the loop and have

them understand your coaching philosophy, it can sometimes backfire. Parents might not fully grasp what you’re trying to accom- plish at certain points in the game, and in turn start instructing their child in the car afterwards. There are also
stories of parents lecturing their player on the way to the game so much so that, by the time the kid gets to the rink, they’re already frazzled. That creates hesita- tion, which in turn makes the player look as though they aren’t trying or don’t know what to do on the ice. There are enough parents out
there who have played hockey, grew up around it or maybe even took a
Whyte
few coaching clin- ics. These people - and others with fewer qualifications - know just enough to be dangerous; their main focus is their child - not the team. Promoting self-
ish place has no place in hockey - or any other team sport - and two wrongs don’t make a right. Constantly
telling your child something com- pletely different from the coach’s instruction gives the impression that the coach doesn’t know what they’re doing. Worst of all are the adults who
speak poorly about other players on the team. By voicing one’s opinion amongst other adults, a parent can create animosity amongst the fami-
lies, which in turn forms “cliques.” That division amongst the elders
will eventually filter down into the club and, ultimately, disrupt any cohesive team building the coach has tried to foster throughout the season. What’s catastrophic is when
parents speak poorly about other players on the team in front of their own child or other team members. But all of these issues can be eas-
ily avoided. Stay positive when com- municating with your child and only discuss things like strong efforts and successful plays; the coaches will take care of the rest. Support your coach in front
of your child, the team and other teams, too. If you truly have a con- cern, bring it to the coach’s attention in a mature and civil manner. And lastly, if you don’t have any-
thing good to say about others on the team, it’s best not to say anything at all.
Sean Whyte is the director of hockey operations and coach-in-chief at DYHA. magazine
