Opportunity Knocks

national “Small Business Saturday” campaign—a movement that has been gaining increasing traction since American Express launched it two years ago. In the end, Small Business Saturday—the Saturday after Thanksgiving—was so successful for Linda that she had to extend her store hours. As an advisor and national spokesperson for Small Business Saturday, I am heartened by the many success stories like Linda’s—retailers who worked hard to stand out from the crowd and used a national campaign as leverage to expand their own success. It is worth nothing that Small Business Saturday spurred an estimated 103 million Americans to shop at independently owned businesses and awareness of the campaign rose to 65 percent in 2011 as compared to 37 percent in 2010. I hope to see more of you embrace Small Business Saturday as a success tool for your store next year! Being a small business owner myself, I can sympathize with how grueling

and yet incredibly rewarding the work can be.
