paul@securitymattersmag.com Does Matter

In July 2006, I came up with the idea of Security Matters— a publication that fo- cuses on helping every size business in Canada improve the security of their data, assets, facilities and staff.

Until that point of time the only publications focusing on security-related is- sues, solutions, products and technologies were ones that dealt with two spe- cific groups of people: those who installed and/or designed security and alarm systems; and those who distinguished themselves as security management. My feeling was that security had become a vital part of every business, that se- curity was no longer just a responsibility of security managers, nor only a cost centre that received attention when something went wrong. In my estimation, se- curity was a business enabler in that it allowed companies who invested in it and who used it wisely to benefit from increased employee efficiencies and produc- tivity, improved and safe exposure online, expanded mobility, and savings on costs associated with incidents of data loss or theft, just to name a few. Further to that, I believed (and still do) that security was an area of concern for every business, regardless of size, scope, location and industry — not to mention every employee within that business. Whether you own a small business, manage a mid-size business or are the chief executive officer of a Fortune 500 company, security must be top of mind of the people responsible for the financial well-being of their respective business. What makes Security Mattersunique is that over its five years and 20 issues, it has covered an over-arching number of issues related to security. From IT secu- rity to physical security to procedural security, we have written about it in both print and online. Our editorial breadth knows no boundaries. By writing about is- sues relating to cloud computing, business continuity, workplace safety, video surveillance, privacy and risk management, we have helped our readers gain in- sight into all areas of security. And because many areas of security converge across a company’s data networks or span between internal departments (e.g., human resources, C-suite, IT), our editorial philosophy has always been one that encourages collaboration between all parties involved in their respective busi- ness’s security posture.

This takes me to present day when good corporate security is as important to a

business’s future viability as a well thought-out business plan or comprehensive sales and marketing strategy. It also brings me to the news that I have sold Secu- rity Matters magazine, along with its sister publication, Security Products Canada, to Annex Business Media, an independent media company that reaches millions of Canadian businesses through its more than 40 magazines. At Annex, Security Matterswill join its stable of security magazines and I will be managing its entire security media division. For you, the reader, this is great news as we will be able to deliver more content to you via more media (e.g., mo- bile, web, e-mail) than ever before.

Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to helping each and every one of you reach your security (and business) goals in 2012.
