INTRODUCTION

‘MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL, MAKE IT INTERESTING’

f there is one abiding principle that governs Scottish Field’s approach to homes and gardens, it’s a requirement to ‘make it beautiful and make it interesting’. Whether we’re profiling a garden on a far-flung Hebridean island or looking at the most stylish and contemporary city slicker interiors, we’re always trying to seek out the finest that Scotland has to offer. To do that with gardens, we use two of the foremost experts in their field. Renowned experts Antoinette Galbraith and Julie Edmonstone scour the country in their quest to find not just the biggest and the best gardens, but the brightest and most interesting. Together, they have such an encyclopaedic knowledge of the nation’s top gardens and gardeners that every month we’re amazed at the sheer variety and quality of the options they place before us.

I INTERIORS the inside story

Whether it’s winter snowdrops in Angus or an explosion of summer foliage in Perthshire, we’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to feature some of the country’s top gardens once again this year. Yet despite the remarkably beautiful photography of Roy Summers and Ray Cox, doing justice to Scotland’s gardens is about more than simply taking beautiful pictures of stunning gardens. The real interest in a garden often comes from the story of its creation, by discovering what its owner hoped to achieve. That’s why our monthly features often tell you as much about the gardener as the garden – one is, after all, largely an expression of the other. Exactly the same is true of interiors, which is why our expert Nichola Hunter brings you readers’ homes rather than simply interiors. It’s easy to tell you what new taps or radiators are on the market; what is more difficult is to find the places where real people have used their imagination to turn houses into living, breathing homes. We know from your feedback that our homes and gardens writers have managed to inform, engage and entertain you in 2011 – and we’re looking forward to doing the same in 2012.
